i'd go with the Subaru WRX from those choices. the S4 would be nice, but it way more than the WRX.

Beware the WRX transmission are only able to hold 280hp max. If you want performance only choose WRX. I test driven WRX 2 times and it's a great deal for that price. If you want luxury and comfort then pick S4. I wouldn't consider 330Xi although BMW makes great cars. Their AWD experience are second tier to Audi and Subaru's.

chris, did you get this comparison idea from car and driver? they have the same exact comparo. the S4 won, WRX, then bimmer. for less than 25K(i think) its unbeatable. but why cant the transmission handle more than 280 hp??

it amazes me that no one here talks bout the quality of the s4s handling and performance.
the brakes are sickly effective. they are huge. and it rides on the nicest rims and tires. the susp is taut, and not unlike a slot car. have you driven one? all the reports on the wrx say it has weak brakes. hmm... i know that the s4 does not. and the luxury of it? hmm... and what about the power? the s4s power band kicks in and plateaus around 1800rpm to 4500rpm... it is pretty crazy when you can sit in third or fourth and cruise at 30 then stomp on it and actually take off... low rpm power is so awesome... and it has the highend too... and six gears... and heated seats and mirrors... and alcantara suede inserts... well worth 40k... and spend another 500 for another 50hp in a chip... hmm... think i like this car? |

Exactly, I also saw like 12 Jaguar X-Types a my local Jaguar Dealer. They look pretty good. I'd get one If I already had an S4.

I did get it from C&D, and 2 of 3 staffers voted for the WRX, but it still lost.
They S4 is very good, but I am a driver, and I want a drivers car, all of those luxury things are no good for speed. Put huge Brembos on the WRX, a stronger tranny, bigger turbo, and bam! An awesome car. The S4 is very, very good though, and for a second car (or if I was married and had kids), it would be a very strong contender.

I test driven WRX and I don't like how it's center of gravity is really high. Too much bodyroll were experience from zig zagging on a open road.

well i read the article in CD and they didnt mention a thing about the WRX's bad tranny. they mentioned it in the good things of the car. but then again these magazines dont say what's really bad about cars, which i dont like. 2 staffers put the WRX 1st and s4 2nd. the other staffer(who remains anonymous) put the audi first and wrx last. the wrx should have won.
