'99 alero dash light "security"???
I have a '99 alero and there's a dash light on the right side that says security. Anyone know what it's for? It's never came on until the other day. I was on the highway and it came on & stayed on until I turned the car off. Last night I stopped somewhere on my way home from work, the light wasn't on when I turned it off. When I tried to turn it on the engine acted like it was going to kick on then this security light started flashing and the engine locked up. The light stayed flashing even after I took the key out, none of the other dash lights came on except the dome light. After I waited a few minutes the light went off and the engine started right up. Is this some kind of theft thing, maybe I turned the key too fast and it thought I was hot wiring it? Why would it come on while I was driving? Also, my heat/ac only works on high too, would this have anything to do with it? Thanks.

Re: '99 alero dash light "security"???
Welcome to AF.
Sounds like you have two problems. The Alero has the Passlock security/anti-theft system. You could have a key cylinder wearing out and not sending the right code the BCM module. There is a relearn procedure you can run next time the SECURITY light comes on the vehicle won't start: With key in and to on wait 10 minutes until the light goes off. Then turn ignition to off. Now start engine. It may have to be repeated. On the loss of HVAC blower motor speeds other than high you have a bad blower motor resistor which is located under the passenger side of the dashboard.

If i might add on to this....I had this problem a few times but the last time the moduel behind the cylinder lock went bad and did not rec. my key. i think it could be the moduel that is bad. What do you think BOB?

Yes, I agree. The cylinder/ignition switch is probably 90% of the Passlock problems. 10% body control module (BCM).
