Coating Axles

Hi,
Here are my specs:
1971 SIIA 88
2.25L Gas
Frame up resto with new galvanized chassis and firewall

I've cleaned up the axles and got them both down to bare metal, then applied a few coats of rust oleum Cold Galvanizing compound. I was going to leave them like that but I noticed that the paint was scratching off fairly easily. What's commonly used to coat axles against nicks and scratches? I've seen some very glossy looking black paint used a lot; is it a special paint?
Thanks,
Eric
EDIT: I've coated them and almost everthing else with por-15
