It all depends on the state everystate verys

in Maryland you have to have a engine the same year or newer if you do a swap

if so then they test you for the car the engine came out of
but if you can't pass smog for the specs of the new engine you CAN NOT get a waver

with the stock engine if you spend in maryland 450bucks they will write you a waver

also in maryland Im almost fully sure JDM engines as with most states are not US smoged so they wont let you use them I know in maryland they will bust your ass for anything to get more money out of you @#$@#$ people

one good thing about SMOG people is everyone is a DUMB @#$#@$ and does not know anything last time I had my civic tested he asked if it was a accord

for the most part honda engines run really really really clean so when you take the test they end up passing

in maryland they look for a cat and do a wheel test other then that they don't pop the hood or check anything else they want to get you in and out as fast as they can so they can kill more time doing what ever it is they do...

even if it said chevy on the valve cover they are really really really dumb maybe 1 out of 5 would pick up on the chevy logo

I have never heard of JDM engines being illegal in any state. Each state does have specific EPA requirements that your engine must meet though. You also have to check with the county you reside in. Many times heavily populated counties have even stricter EPA standards. OH yea. It is illegal in almost every state to put an engine in your car that is from a car older than your car (i.e. i have a 2001 civic therefore it would be illegal to put an engine in it from a 2000 or older car)

There's a reason we get "all the sweet jap parts". It's because you can use them if you know how

Thumbs up

yes you can pass smog/emsions i have a b16a and just it to pass all i did was put the cat back on. i also have a bullfrog ecu programmed with a 8500rpm redline and rsr exhaust. i've heard the b16a2 will not pass but don't quote me on that. just make sure you have your cat on and all of your exhuast is tight so there is no leaks in that will fail you. good luck.

because they're jdm......they're not for usdm market and usdm cars.......if they were legal, don't you think everyone would be getting swaps and shit?......also there's the problem of emissions......and stuff.....i heard that as long as the motor is the same or newer year and the same car make, then it's legal.......but i think that only applies to usdm.......i'm not too sure about jdm engines......

Technically speaking, ANY modification to your car that is not a direct OEM replacement is illegal....... so yeah, a JDM swap is illegal, technically speaking...... as well as exhausts, altezza tail lights, lowered ride height, etc....... if you really want to be technical. Truth be told however, 99% of the people administering the smog test in states OTHER than Cali either:
A) Dont have a fucking clue as to WHAT engine comes with the car

or

B) Don't give two shits...
