exhaust system

Just came back from getting car inspected and found out that the "flex" pipe needs to be replaced; my question is, is this the same as an "intermediate exhaust pipe"? I had the latter done 4 years ago with a guarantee for life of owner of car.

Most cars have a flex attached to the front pipe from the engine, the intermediate pipe is not the same
