won't shift into overdrive

My 95 Lumina with 199,000 miles on it will not always shift into overdrive. It seems to do it more when its first started for the day. I have changed trans fluid and filter regularly so I don't think its that. If is not shifting into overdrive, I have to stop the car , shut it off, then restart and it will then shift. Anyone else have this problem.

Re: won't shift into overdrive

This can be a shift solenoid issue or an internal problem, get is scanned by a trans shop for a proper diagnosis.

Re: won't shift into overdrive

yes it is a 4t60e. Shifts into OD 95 percent of the time. If you run it around alittle before going on the road it seems fine. Its when you hit the road immediately.

Re: won't shift into overdrive

Until the temps reach a preset limit it will not see o/d, pcm programming.

Re: won't shift into overdrive

If it doesn't shift into OD, it never will. The only way to make it shift is to stop, shut it off, restart, then it will be fine. Crazy I know.

Re: won't shift into overdrive

A trans function scanner in the hands of a trans tech can look at internal solenoid operation and pcm commands to see what the issue may be.

Re: won't shift into overdrive

Apparently something was just loose behind the engine. I recently changed the rear exhaust manifold and no more "no shifting into overdrive"

I see this thread is over 5 year's old.
I know what Gene mean's.
I have the same problem with my 95.
I kick it in neutral, coast and turn the key off for 10 second's and fire it back up and there is overdrive.
Just had the tran's rebuilt after my no lock up and blew the front seal out problem i previously posted.
Talked to the builder and a new solenoid pack was installed and i even installed another body control module and i still have the problem.

YOU do not have this problem. The guy who rebuilt the transmission has this problem. Take it back, tell him to call you when it's fixed.
