Re: WIP: Yamaha R1 Tuner

Ok, so it's time to start the assembly and get a move on with this build. Today I'll give you pics of the finished engine and swing arm assembly and tomorrow I'll hopefully post picture of the naked bike fully assembled.

What's new on the engine? I've added throttle cables. These would go into a box underneith the tank on the real bike but that won't fit so I've stuck them away at the clutch cover. On the left side you can spot my most expensive piece of plastic. I had to buy a new mold tree to get the sprocket cover that I've misplaced...10 USD plus shipping... Lucky I needed some primer... I sprayed it Alclad II Jet Exhaust, covered it partly with some SMS CF and put some Model Factory Hiro rivets where there was originaly molded in ones.

Looking through a R1 service manual I found loads of extras that I would have made if I had the manual when I began the build. Now I'll stick to an extra radiator hose on the left side and to rebuild the clutch (not visible here).

I finally assembled the rear swing arm and I think it turned out just dandy! Caliper got some rivets installed on the top side and I then glued the brake disc and caliper in place on the rimb using super glue. To get the right fit with the tire I had to make a spacer out of styrene rod. Looking at the right side you can see that I've drilled the screw head down into the rimb and I will later cover it with a plastic bolt.

The fender is painted Metallic Grey (same as the tank) and then I added some CF in the middle. I pinned it down with some rivets.
Brake line is .6 mm fishing line painted gun metal.
Chain guard got some phillips head bolts as fastners.

Hope you all like it.
/Joel

Tell me, Joel, why do you use fishing line instead of the standard Tamiya vynil tubing?
Well, it looks real, that's for sure...

Cheers!

First of all, thanks for the compliments!

Then about fishing line. In my opinion the vinyl tubing supplied by Tamiya is way to thick. I would say that the meassurements for the different bike lines would be something close to this, throttle: .4 mm, brake- and clutch .6 mm. The idea about fishing line is that it comes in so many dimensions. You have the both mentioned but also .2 mm for instance that I use for electronic wiring.
Second thing is that the fishing line can be painted any color you īlike. Tamiya leaves you with black...
Hope that clears it?!
/Joel

Outstanding craftmanship Joel... where did you get the black radiator hoses?

The radiator hose on this build is made by Sakatsu but I know there are other brands as well. Try "mesh" in the search engines at your after market detailing shop and you'll find them.

Re: WIP: Yamaha R1 Tuner

Test fitting at its best but today I got beat. With all the stuff mounted on the swing it wasn't possible to get the exhaust system in place with the engine in position. Tried a lot of different angles but finally I had to surrender and split the exhaust system at the EXUP.

Result of all the trouble was that almost every loose part of the engine fell off and all the radiator hoses as well. Have a lot of touching up when it comes to scratches after me trying to force the swing into position (Why do you do that )

Hopefully I have some pics of the naked bike up by the afternoon.

Now it's time for some coffee...

I did actually and lucky me that I took pictures of the system before this melt down AND that the pipes will be covered by the cowlings...

Ok, today I finished off the front forks and installed them on the bike together with the exhaust and the swing arm. Here's a few pics to show you. Never mind the rear brake line...it went out of position when I fought the swing arm and it wasn't the day to fix it...all that coffee took its tribune...

Now I'm off to London but hopefully you'll see this finished in the next fourtnight.

Sorry to hear about that trouble, Joel, but I'm sure it will work out fine!
