The shop wouldn't touch it without the timing cover, since it has the marks, so he ordered a new one and this car should hopefully be leaving this weekend....

We got another cover and he towed the car to his uncle's friend who happens to have his own shop. He timed it up for us, but the car has a blown head gasket between cylinders 1 & 2, which explains why the compression is low. I suppose I should have checked ALL the cylinders, rather than just doing 1 & 2 and assuming that it was out of time. Oh well, lesson learned.
