Rod bearing about to go?

how can you tell if you are about to spin a rod bearing? i mean i hear something spinning when i shift but i don't know if it's the rod bearing... i do know however that my valves need to be re-adjusted maybe that's what may be making that noise. 20k miles of on and off hard driving. i only really notice it when it's cold out though and my car is cold.... i don't know, i'm freaked out.. i have a 97 ex with 67k miles got it at 44k miles. i don't have any cel codes or any oil leak problems like i read would happen if i were to be having trouble with a rod bearing... i was thinking maybe it was just a combo of the loud valves and the cold engine...

You can't. When a rod or main bearing goes - it goes suddenly. No warning. And you have very little time to react and shut it down before the engine junks itself.

I can almost guarantee that you do not have this problem. Unless the previous owner had it on nitrous way past it's redline all the time, you're not going to spin a bearing.

I have no idea what a "spinning" sound is like; and what exactly do you mean by "when I shift"? Try to be a little more descriptive of the sound and exactly when it happens.
