Common Cause of A/C death in accord?

My accord 4th gen. AC doesnt work, and it has'nt worked since I bought it but never checked into getting it fixed, but Im sick of sweating my balls off every summer and I want it fixed now. Was/is there any common problems with the A/c in 4th gen that would cause it not to work? I know there is no freon (s/p?) in the system now, but im not willing to get it filled to find out there is a leak? If its a leak, how much would it cost to fix? Can I do it myself? If there is a common problem with these A/C unites and its not a leak, what is it, and can I fix it myself? How much am I looking at spending?

Thanks guys,

well first see if theres a leak. get a cooling guy to check out the pressure. if the pressure and freon are good then check the belt. if the belts good see if the clutch on the compressor is engaging. if not see if the relay is working. if the relay is working see if the clutch is bad in the compressor itself.

have a nice day
