That is very true those tires have a horrible time on ice, but with in 4hi or low they will get you moving.

Re: Best mud/road tire?

Any great offroad tire will do terrible on ice. They have big lugs which float over the ice and not much surface area, I have a buddy who says slicks will do better on ice that offroad tires (but he's always saying crazy things, never know what's based on something).

I too would have to say BFG M/Ts, or one with very similar tread. Mud Kings have almost identical tread, and are much cheaper, but I've heard they do bad on-road, and I think the biggest size they make is 31x11.5x15. Firestone also makes a similar tread pattern, but I don't know what it's called. I've got 2 of them in the back of my truck, I'll look tomorrow, and if I remember, I'll post the name here.

Fireston Destination M/T
BFG M/T
Mickey T's are awesome and he's also got two brand new wheels this year
Baja Claw http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/mt_claw35bias/ no idea on what tread wear would be like. I do have a friend that has the Baja Belted HP's (35by12.5/17) and they throw mud like no other.
Toyo or Nitto tires

Re: Best mud/road tire?

Well Folks I would have to agree with most people on the BFG M/T's and the BFG A/T's. Both really impressive tires for on and off road Duty.. However, i just bought my Second set of Nitto Terra Grapplers, and i would reccomend these to everyone.. i got 45000 miles outta my first set of 33 inch Terras, and they pull hard in the mud and dirt.. Good luyck with the tires

its goin to be a compromise for what u are lookin for. there is no such thing as a great mud tire that is great on the highway. depedning what its goin on u can get 30k miles out of a swamper. you never said what its goin on. Like the bogger will be awesome in the mud and crappy on the road and a BFG will be great on the road and hardly decent in the mud. its all about compromise

I have found that Yokohama Geolandar m/t's are very good in the mud, they are a little noisy on the road, but they wear pretty decent for a mud tire.

Take a look at the Super Swamper SSR.I have a set on an 03 F-150 with 30,000 or so on them and they will last another 3000-5000.These tires are great on road from my experience.Snow, ice and rain can be scary on a set of mudders but these tires are the best I have ever had and I have had BFG,Dunlop, and Bridgestone M/T's.It is amazing how these tires perform on road and everyone knows the mud capabilties lol.

have you owned a pair?
my bias hawgs are great...

hawgs are great in all conditions except for rocks.. yes the hard compound is not good for rocks....

hawg 2's are radial and are ok...
bias hawgs get out of round when they sit but 5 minutes down the road and they re-shape....

bias hawgs are the second best to boggers with the fact that they last 5x longer than boggers.....

I say
bias ply
hawgs
radial
Firestone Destinator MT's (got a friend of mine to buy and loves them)

p.s. glad hawgs are not good in mud

after pulling him out...

Re: Best mud/road tire?

I have been selling most of the tires that are talked about on here except for the ground hawgs. I have ran most of them on my trucks including the ground hawgs. I would strongly suggest the ground hawgs over all others for everything except rock crawling. They do great in mud, there directional tread does really good in sand, and the agressive tread does good in snow. The wear on the road is the best bar none. I have a set of 38.5 15 15 bias ply ground hawgs with 50,000 miles and they still have 10-11/32 tread left. The noise is there but nowhere as bad as super swampers or the bfg mt or other convetional mt's.
