2000 Alero 3400 - Broken Coil Spring

I noticed I have a broken coil spring on the front passenger side (2000 Alero 3400). Is this something I can repair or should I have it done at a garage?

If it soemthing I can do does anybody have any help or links I can go to in order to assist me in doing the repair?

Re: 2000 Alero 3400 - Broken Coil Spring

I dont know of any links right off, except for something like alldata, chiltons etc etc.

I dont know your experiance level but with a high quality spring compressor and a Vise, it can be done at home it isnt to difficult but is very dangerous if not done properly.
Especialy since the spring is borken, it makes it a little unstable when removing.

-Jack up and suport vehicle.
-Basicly you remove the two lower strut mount bolts.
-The 3 upper bearing plate nuts.
-Place the strut into the vice, wrapping the jaws and dont overtighten or it'll crush.
-Mark the end of the spring on top & bottom plates so the new one will line up exact.
-Attach the high quality spring compressor, and remove the tension on the top bearing plate.
-Loosen the damper shaft(large nut in the top center of strut assemb).
-Lift off the washer, bearing plate assmb.
pull off plastic cover.
-Carefully remove the compressed spring and set it somewhere safe keeping it pointed away from your head.
-Check upper and lower plate and rubber stops for wear, replace as needed.

Then follow the directions with the spring compressor to remove the spring and install the new one.

This may not be vehicle specific; however, the procedure is the same!

Yeah HotZ28 that'll have a few pics, and pics always help.

I could probly dig up the proper torque specs if needed.
