Cutlass -90 servicelight

The "service engine soon"-light comes on as soon as the car gets warm, it lacks power and runs unevenly when I let go of the throttlepedal while driving, have checked all contacts and vacuumhoses, while idling it feels as if the engine runs on "5 1/2" cylinders... The problem started yesterday after I had misread the oillevel and added oil, is it possible that too much engineoil can cause the problem?

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

Yes, overfilling is Bad.

You can check the codes or get them scanned to see why and whats causing the SES.

Here is a link!
Trouble Codes

Check to the right for "Reading Codes "

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

No mention of engine assume it's 3.1, should be at the top/ back of the intake manifold.

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

The problem has changed slightly... now the engine don't have to be warm, the servicelight comes and goes anyway.
If I drive with the light off the light comes on right after the engine hesitates for a second, if the light is on the opposite happens. If the light is off a sure way to turn it on is a sharp leftturn...
Help, where is the MAP sensor located on a Olds Cutlass Cruiser-90 with 3.3 L engine?

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

Your Cutlass hav a 3.3 ?
You sure its not the 3.1 ?

I've never seen a 3.3 in 90' Cutalss's.

Turning the wheel left shouldnt effect the MAP or anything electronic, unless thiers a loose connection somewhere.

Wires can also be fraided inside the wire casings too casing intermitant trouble codes.....

heres a pic of a 90 3.1 with lactions of senosrs.
The map should be on the back of the motor, between the firewall and engine. Black box about 1.5" X 3", with a vacum that goes from it to the intake.
Component locations

BTW-From that link above you can test these Components to make sure they are faulty before you just waste money on things that arent broken or faulty.

I have a pic or two of a 3.3, but You cant see the MAP sensor location.

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

Thanks for the picture but nothing exept the cylinders are located in the same place as on my engine...
I mentioned in my first post serious oil overfilling, after draining about a litre i,m down(!) on ther upper level mark. The problems started directly after overfill. Is it possible that some oil found it's way to the intakemanifold thru the crankcaseventilation and creates trouble for any sensor...? It's a longshot, I know but...

Exclamation Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

After all the back and forth now you tell us this is an export car we are guessing about! No engine size to start out with and now the rest comes out. Some Cieras were branded Ciera Cutlasses, is this what you have, these were A in the vin and W was the Cutlass. You need to stop and think what people sitting at a desk require to provide comprehensive info.

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

Sorry but I didn't understad that there was any difference between exportcars and the ones that stayed in the states... The exact name is Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser Brougham W35, once again I apologise for the lack of exact information.
If it matters the car has a Delco ign.system.

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

If you have a vin N (3.3) vehicle, there is no map sensor, 34 is the mass air flow sensor in the air intake and they were troublesome. Overfilled oil may have caused the sensor to get contaminated, but not one liter over.

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

OK, thank you for the answer. It could be more than a litre... before I started draining the engine the oillevel on the dipstick was about one inch over "full"-marking. If that caused the problem, is it possible that the sensor will "heal" by itself or is it dead?
I really appreciate your patience with all the stupid questions and a less than good english!

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

English is excellent, better than some of our natives! See if there is any oil in the sensor itself or ducting, if ok, check the connector to it, then figure on replacing it.

Re: Cutlass -90 servicelight

Thank you for your time, I will follow your advise and hopefully I don't need to replace anything. I'll let you know the result.
Regards, Anders
