1993 Gt D.o.h.c Ho

Ok so I have alot of white smoke comming from the exaust of my car? Which is probly the head Gasket!, I just bought this car so im not sure how much time or effort it will take to do the job. I was wondering if any of you have ever changed a head Gasket in this type of car or motor? and if you have what does it take?

Gakets? Timing chains? or whatever it takes and if there is a site that can help me with this.

There is about 110,00 miles on the motor,

Re: 1993 Gt D.o.h.c Ho

That does not work because i have the 2.3l DOHC HO motor, I have to take the timing chain housing off

(which is a pain, Still have not figured out how to get it off yet)

I started tearing it apart and it seems to be easier to pull the whole motor and then do the work out side of the car! If you know where i could find a good motor let me know,

Re: 1993 Gt D.o.h.c Ho

Re: 1993 Gt D.o.h.c Ho

see the problem with that List of things to do is that it does not tell you have to remove the timing gear case. Which liek i said before is a pain in the ass, there are i think i caounted 30 bolts in there that i had to take out already. Fighing the side walls of the car while in the process. I can pull the motor and do all the work on a motor stand in probly less time then its taking me to fight the car for room and fight the rusty nuts and bolts. The reason you have to take the Timing gear case off is becuase the cams are held in place by it and you cant get the valve covers or the head off with the timing gear cover on. So what im thing of doing now is taking the motor out having the Head and the block rebuilt. and while i have the motor out change timing gears and chaing main bearing rods and maybe even clutch, pressure plate and throwout baring. Since its the HO motor I was also thinking about maybe getting the heads 20 thousands over and getting it shaved also. give me a little extra horse power. I knwo, I knwo its only a 4 cylinder. I was also thinking about maybe looking into putting a v6 in it but i do not see where there is room to fit anything esle in those cars. I bought a hayes book today and its not that great says what to do, But does not really specify anything. More a General book for people who work on cars everyday. Anyways I will get back at ya when i finally finish, send you a pic of the car. Thanks for all the help.

Re: 1993 Gt D.o.h.c Ho

ok i see what you are saying.
the procedures on teh right side collume, heres the Link to the timing cover.
see part 10 for your no room troubles. some pics on this page will help !

Believe me, It would take longer then you thinnk to remove the motor. Usually its extracted through the bottom, trany and all.

Take your time and make notes so everything goes back together smoothly.
2 words Ziplocks and sharpi

Good Luck!

Re: 1993 Gt D.o.h.c Ho

I took all that off already. But for some readon i cant get the timing housing off!!

The timing housing needs to come off because it hold the cams on. I have taken all the bolts out and removed all of the stuff that seems to be holding it on. with it being aluminum i do not want to pry or torque on it because im afraid to break it. There is 2 dowl pin that might be holding on but like i said i do not want to pry and break anything.

everything including all the timing gears chain and slides are all out, Pully is off, I just do not know whats holding it on.

Re: 1993 Gt D.o.h.c Ho

You'll need a hammer(preferably rubber or plastic) and a screw driver or putty knife.
Start prying/working your way around the outside of that housing , thats the only way it'll come off, and use the hammer liberallly

Good Luck
