garageHEART- Nissan Sunny Truck VTEC

Hi All,

With the Fairlady build coming to an end we have another build that some might have seen on our premises. It might have fooled some in thinking it's Hakosuka but this one is more a take-over project. Also it has plenty borrowed parts, one from a GT-R Hakosuka and the other from a Honda S2000. This is one truck with a serious identity crisis.

Story
My good friend Dadaman (Raees) started this build in the heart of the Sunny Truck craze, then the craze was further extended with a Hakosuka front being made for sunny trucks and it was dubbed a Hakotora. This was also the start of Dadaman's personal build's being put on hold to finish a few commission builds and I approached him and said, "Bud realistically you will not get to finish it and allow garageHEART to complete it!" Well money was handed over for it as well and it ended up at gH. Am I going to do Raees proud? Probably not and here is why...

Direction
I personally own an actual Sunny truck and have owned it before the craze hit, this allowed me to buy all the cool stuff for it before the hype tax hit and this allowed me to touch the very surface of this chassis. I know these trucks very well (without boasting) which will allow me to use this experience and hopefully build a fairly detailed Sunny. Adding to that , I would not have gone Hako front as I simply love the OEM fronts, however the attention a Hakotora gets will be good for business, therefore this Truck will be garageHEART's delivery vehicle.

So I might not do Raees proud by going all flashy and fancy colours and big wide wheels etc. But will be a low and fast Truck so that customers can get their parts quickly. With weighing in under 800kg's even if i go sr20ve it will be pretty quick but I want something different, so we chose an F20 from an s2000. Maybe I need Instagram now to get plenty likes and jump on the hype train haha. No don't worry we will keep it real for now. Building this one for garageHEART and a nod to my friends creation thus far.

Build
When it the Sunny arrived it had the front fitted but needed some filling and sanding. It also needed the engine bay to be made and hood/bonnet to be smoothed and filled.

With The Fairlady out of the way we have some space to work on the Sunny truck. This one im very excited about. I have seen plenty Sunny builds online and they look great when done. I hope gH's comes out half as decent.

(above) This is its current sleeping place. It's time to wake it up. You can see it became a storage facility, oops

(Above) Moved the Prelude out of the way so that the Sunny can be taken out of that spot

(above) Sunny now on the hoist, climbed up to show you the work needed on the front of this truck

(above) Lots of sanding, smoothing and filling...then repeat.

(above I have started making the engine bay. Basic for now, will slowly add details.

(above) The Hakosuka front lines up very well...

Thanks in advance for viewing and commenting.

Re: garageHEART- Nissan Sunny Truck VTEC

In this episode we will get the F20 into the Sunny...

gH worked on the engine bay to get it ready so we could test fit the gearbox and engine. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of space left in the engine however the intake wont work as it touches the shock tower. This is good news, we can now run individual throttle bodies.

Onto pictures.

(above) Gearbox fits, i had to trim from the tunnel slightly but not much.

(above) Made the cross bar/panel between the section where the lights will go.

(above) Sub-frame in, did some tweaking to this to accommodate the f20. Ample space and no need to lift hood to clear valve cover.

(above) More than enough space, using the OEM header for now. Will scratch build a Spoon header.

(above) Move the Sunny to the other side. You can see the sub-frame and lower control arm in position. Test fitting stage now. once happy with everything, it will be stripped and sprayed etc.

(above) Exciting times ahead now...

(above) Slight adjustments need to be made to the engine as its sitting a bit too high in front. Also need to make the mounts fit properly, it is currently resting on the sub-frame.

Re: garageHEART- Nissan Sunny Truck VTEC

garageHEART put some thought into the colour, we chose a colour that a sunny truck came out in as well as a hakosuka, however we chose a silver that was used on a KPGC10 GT-R... This might seem easy, simply google the colour?!

unfortunately with each search came different responses and many saying depending on year and one site said no kpg was the same (in terms of colour) and it left me with a huge headache. I then remember when I imported parts for my Nissan i emailed Nissan Japan and they emailed me part numbers almost immediately, I then tried asking for the exact colour code for a KPGC10, not expecting much. However here is the email:

and here is their reply:

This made me extremely happy and again realising that Japanese customer service is truly amazing. With this info I then trekked to a local automotive paint mixer and bought some paint for the VTEC Sanitora...

(above) went for silver metallic 025

which then brought us to this...

(above) This was after clear was put on... not yet polished

There are some issues, but im leaving it. once done it will be hardly noticeable. I have also started on the smaller parts like wiper motor; brake master; hooter; steering column and throttle/accelerator cable. I have completed the Spoon Sports header as well. Will be shown in the next episode... now the exciting part begins.

Thanks all for looking and commenting

(above) This image shows all piping and cables etc. Itb ram tubes will be neatened up

(above) almost there...

(above) Front end slowly growing on me, aero lip still needs to be made smooth and sprayed again.

(above) checking u-bolts if they tight.

(above) Dust cover fitted on front wheel.

(above) Now to fit battery and wire it up and move onto the interior...

Re: garageHEART- Nissan Sunny Truck VTEC

Small update... final piece fitted to the engine and bay.

(above) Took a strip of styrene, shaped it, made some round stuff to clear oil cap/bolts etc. and here is the end result. Just to paint it and add decal.

Now its the easy part of the build. however so many projects happening at once- so updates might be slow :-(

Re: garageHEART- Nissan Sunny Truck VTEC

Build update...

In this episode we find out just how close to completion this abomination is

(above) Hakosuka style exhaust exit. I figured there was nothing that ties up to the front, was going to add a gt-r fin but that would take away the functionality of loading goods on the back. Also fitted corner bumpers. Those who followed this build from the start will also notice the interior and glass has been fitted.

(above) Mirrors are on permanently. I fitted a TRD tosco seat for the driver and a Hakosuka lseat for passenger (headrest removed). Sorry no interior pics, could not get a good angle of it when fitted, will try again. You can also see how low the sump sits, eek.

(above) Here it shows the colour of the dashboard, managed to use my really Nissan and get the paint matched up. Will get some pics of interior, im very happy with it.

comments and criticism always welcomed.
Thanks for looking

Re: garageHEART- Nissan Sunny Truck VTEC

In this post we look at the smaller details...

(above) Tail lights painted and fitted. Looks real good, not the paint, im talking about how close Hasegawa managed to get this to look like the real thing.

(above) Aerial fitted and Hakosuka exhaust box.

(above) B-pillar vents fitted.

(above) Wipers and front window trim detailed as well as fender indicators/repeaters fitted.

Very close to completion, as with everything its the finishing touches that take the most time. Going to work on the Bonnet this week, get that as perfect as possible.

Re: garageHEART- Nissan Sunny Truck VTEC

The following images are edits... simply for effect and to set the scene before the final images are released. I dont normally do edited pics as they tend to hide issues and i want to show all flaws etc.

ENJOY!
