Instrument cluster turns off at startup

Ok so my 90 toronado is acting crazy. Which isn't surprising. Basically, when I turn the key to power on but not start it, everything comes up- digital readout, oil pressure, engine temp., climate control readout, etc. But when I turn the key to start it, everything shuts off including the tach, speedometer, and the climate côntrol reads three dashes. It starts and runs fine. If I remove the instrument cluster, the climate control works perfectly. As soon as I plug it back in .... Nothing. Battery connections are good. It throws a code of E047. Any ideas?

Thank you! I'll have to bookmark that site. I took mine apart and cleaned the crud out of it, put it back and she worked perfectly. Hopefully it's not short lived but now I know where the problem is at least. Thank you so much. I've had this car for 15 years and I can't part with it!
