Air Bag light
I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 Z71, 252,000 miles, 4.8, Automatic Trans. Yesterday the airbag light on the dash came on and will not go off. any ideas what would cause this?

Re: Air Bag light
this maybe the sensor in the front of the vehicle. some have had this cause this. first see if the fuses are good.

Re: Air Bag light
I checked the fuse in the fuse box on the drivers side of the dash and it was good. Is there more than one fuse for the air bags?

Re: Air Bag light
check all the fuses just to be sure. then look for the front ABS sensor crash impact device . see if it is connected and secure. then go to scrap yard see if you can get one off a wreck for testing. if it fixes it buy a new sensor. post back what it was .

Re: Air Bag light
Yep. Get the codes checked. While it probably is a impact sensor, it could be anything else also. It's not legal in my state to sell used SIR parts, too much liability.

Re: Air Bag light
does it take a special tool to scan for SRS codes? I put my scan tool on it and no codes came up. Thanks J cat for the suggestion. Local salvage yard does have one I can get for testing purposes.

Re: Air Bag light
Your scanner probably can't read SRS codes, which are "B" codes...usual scanners can only read "P", or Powertrain codes....
OTC makes a code reader, that reads Powertrain, ABS, and SRS codes, if you are so inclined to get one.... |

also my info reports have stated that the fuse or the front impact sensor is the cause with this vehicle . if this code will not clear after testing then it will cost you a lot more to fix. |

Re: Air Bag light
I went and had the code read at lunch. Local Auto Electric shop checked it for me for $35. Turns out it was the Passenger Air Bag on/off switch. Picked one up at local salvage yard for another $35 and light is out. Dealer wanted $90 for switch. Thank you to everyone for the help.
