Unhappy Re: Need Help

Hey Lincolnmaster80; there are no leaks along any of the hoses anywhere on the engine. The problem is when I fill the expansion tank, the cooolant goes directly thru the hose leading to the firewall thlenn to the tube extending to the tranny bay and on the ground. Could there be an obstruction in the hoses you described in the expansion tank diagram that I should check?

Re: Need Help

I'm truly stumped at this one. The only thing I have left is maybe the expansion tank has developed a crack, being old and heating up and cooling process of the coolant. This is a common problem on the E38's but I don't recall hearing about it on the E32's. Take the expansion tank out and check for cracks on that. If the tubes and pipe work is fine, as you said it was, then the only thing I can think of would be a crack somewhere you can't see, which would explain why coolant just leaks out as soon as you dump it in. If the tank is fine, I'm miffed as I can't think of any other possibilities.

Re: Need Help

Hey Lincolnmaster; sorry for the delay in getting back... Had other things to do. I changed the heater core and still the same problem. I noticed that whatever part is in front of the heater core may be the culprit. Help me figure this one out. Is this unit that looks like the heater core the problem?

Re: Need Help

If it's the same part I'm thinking of, I believe that is the evaporator. I'll do a bit of digging...

This might be the culprit right here:

Remove the expansion tank and have a poke around:

The temp guage going hot is probably do to air lock and low coolant.
It's worth mentioning that the T-joint on part #12 where it leads up to the expansion tank is a known problem area. If there isn't any coolant leaking inside the cabin when you refill the expansion tank, then your problem isn't inside the car...

Re: Need Help

The heating unit primary is within the cottage, behind the sprint. To substitute, you'd have to take apart your whole sprint if I keep in mind properly. So, you have to be a bit more particular. Is the flow arriving from under the engine? If so, is the flow near the top part or the back of the motor. We already know it's on the motorists part. If it was the heating unit primary, your windows would be clouding up with a water that is difficult to get rid of, you'd have no warm, and a continuous fragrance of coolant in the cottage.
