crazy idea but u gotta read?

Alright was thinking why do people use wood when they build sub boxes? Why not build some some cheap 1/16 metal and fabrice a box that way wouldnt you get a much more resignating sound from the sub?

Re: crazy idea but u gotta read?

because wood is easy to work with, cheap, and if properly build doesn't flex. The whole point of a box is to create an airspace for the sub that doesn't change volume. If you made it out of 1/16" metal, it would flex like a balloon. AND be a royal pain in the butt to work with. You don't want "resignating" sound anyway.

edit... and it's not actually wood. MDF is basically really really thick cardboard.

Re: crazy idea but u gotta read?

well, MDF is finely ground wood particles pressed togather with layres of wood fibers...
but if you used 1/4" cold rolled steel and welded it propwerly and braced every axis once with metal welded, it would work...but that is a huge pain inthe ass welding project, your cheapo walmart arc wleder wont weld 1/4"....

Re: crazy idea but u gotta read?

oh, BTW, high end home stereo subwoofers are often steel or lead lined inside, it adds mass to the wood making its Fs drop dramatically and makes it harder to flex...
