intermitent wiper relay, 91 Tracker

I have a 91 Tracker with intermitent wipers that do not function. The problem is in the relay. But where is the relay located. My dealer manuel gives me all the diagnostics but does not locate it EXACTLY as to it's location..YES I know there are relays attached to the bracket that holds the ECM. but there are 4 here and which one if at all is the relay for the INTERMITENT wiper.

Re: intermitent wiper relay, 91 Tracker

I am not aware of any relays for the delay feature. Usually it is controlled by the switch, or circuit board in the wiper motor.

Thanks for your reply, but yes it is controlled by a relay. The relay when turned on powers up then moves the wiper blade through the motor, when it moves the relay discharges, then re-charges again for the next swipe. All this info is in the dealer repair manuel,,,,except where it is located or the part no,
Thanks Dave

Re: intermitent wiper relay, 91 Tracker

Does your manual include wiring diagrams with wire colors? If so find the relay with the proper combination of colors and that's your culprit.

If not, try disconnecting one relay at a time while running the wipers. The one that kills the wipers completely is the one you want.

If no wiper action at all, then try probing the relay contacts with a test light and the wiper switch on. You may find the correct relay this way, but likely all the relays are energized.

Last option, trace the wires from the switch to the relay. A real pain.

BTW relays don't charge/discharge, they are simply electrically operated switches. The timer circuit that energizes the relay is what charges/discharges, and is likely the faulty component. Look for a small circuit board with some resistors and capacitors mounted to it and is connected somewhere between the switch and the relay.
