Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Some problems today....
After have placed the carbon fiber on the rear cowl, I begun to try a photocopied template of the S27 decal.
Completely wrong.... the decals don't join at the end of the cowl. So after this:

I decide to try with masking tape. Very difficult pattern.... I airbrushed the black but after removing the tape I had in my hands something of orrible!!!! I didn't make a picture but really a shame....
So now I start again from here:

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Andrew59it - I just received my ST27 Laguna Seca decal set from Kevin at Strada motorsports. How was it the decal did not fit at the end of the cowl? also what paint was that you used on the rear cowl? - Andrea did you put tape on an un-clear coated decal? you know it will peal off - John

From my reference the right and left stripes join together at the end of the rear cowl (see the picture). The decals have a wrong shape in my opinion. The paint is an original FIAT 500 color, diamond white, but it seems to be not very different from tamiya pearl white.
Yes I know about tape and decal (sometime peel off even with clear on) but I had no choice, now I have another idea , I will begin with black decal and I will put on carbon fiber at the end.

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Andrea - I have the "Lorenzo" decals. I see what you mean about the decals not fitting. A technique I use when I get a unique set of decals - I color photo-copy "zerox" the decals and then make a "masking tape" template to check the fit of the decals on the model so that I can determine where the decals do not fit correctly. I know it is a little late for you for that now, but it is a "technique" for other models. I do not do it for every model I build but I use it for models with decals that are rare or hard to find. I used it on a 2007 Assen "Fiat 500 Rossi" bike I did for a customer. Also If you have a color copy of the decal you can try to re-create it if the decal is no longer available. Thanks for the paint information - I have the Tamiya pearl white for that. You are doing an excellent job on this build so far and I can see you are a perfectionist. - John

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Andrea - I just thought of another way to "mask" without using tape. If you cover the area you do not want paint to get on you can use "Microsol Mask" to cover the areas and the remove it when you are ready - that should come off without affecting the decal. - if anyone has had trouble with decals covered with "Microsol Mask" please let us know - John

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Hello John, I didn't use the decal for now. I have only to make again the carbon fiber one, I used the tamiya template for reproduce them with SMS decals. Now as I have a sheet of black decal I'm thinking about to make them new scannering the original one and adjusting the rear portion....

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Andrea - yes that's what I do for some decals - I scan them and make duplicates on decal paper and then I can reproduce some decals - also depending on your printer options you can "enlarge" the image some and then print the bigger decal and trim it to fit - John

I've got this kit and the decal sheet and am thankful that you are "blazing the trail" for my build. Great work so far and thanks again!

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

I have made the fork sensor with a copper tube of 1 mm with a 0,5 rod inside and a cutted top studio electric connector for the end.

Now I will paint it clear red over silver and add carbon fiber decal for the lower section. It looks good installed....

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Andrea - the GP sensor looks good but you must trim away some of the 1mm tubing so that the "rod" shaft extends down a little more - the way it is now there is no travel permitted by the GP sensor - John

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Hello John this is a different sensor, it's the one you may see on the picture of the box. It has a carbon fiber shield for the lower section...

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Andrea - that's very good attention to detail - I have never seen that type of sensor before with the outer covering. I'm not sure if that is not some type of shield for the sensor shaft. There is far more travel on the front forks than it would appear the sensor would allow. I have not seen this picture you have included the link for before. It is possible that it is a shield? I'm not sure though - looks like something out of carbon fiber. - do you follow the MotoGP racing? what do you think of Yamaha wanting Edwards to quit and retire? Also I hear that Yamaha "factory" Fiat team has gone back to the 2010 frames "chassis" - because the 2011 does not work well. The Tech3 team is stuck using 2011 frames for 2011 so far and Edwards and his teammate are struggling with good finishes.- Let me know what you find out about the sensor. - John
