Worldwide sales of all E31 8 Series BMWs was 30,621.

There were 1510 of the BMW 850CSi were produced worldwide and 250 were officially imported to the united states. The non-US spec 850CSi were call M850CSi.

By the way, the ONLY two vehicles that were actually produced by BMW M GmbH
(BMWMotorsport)Garsching,Germany were the M5's(up to the E34's)AND 850CSi's. None of the M3's and the current M5's(E39) have been assembled at Motorsport---they are/were assembled in the same factory as the rest of the "regular" cars at Dingolfing, Germany

The six speed 850i was only in 5% of the production cars from 1991-1993 (only 2-3 in 1993 had six speeds). After that all the 850i, 850Ci, 840Ci has automatics. The 850CSi produced from 1994 to 1995 came standard with the Getrag Six speed only.

Hope this helps!

Sean

Not really (surely not in Europe at least). An ''M'' does not (necessarily) an M-car make!

wow, M8, even I hadn't heard of that one. S70/1 engine, basically the same as the McLaren F1. Only one prototype built, and that wasn't even road safe. 550hp Ferrari killer supposedly. That car could have been amazing. I've always said that BMW knows how to make great engines and should put them in their OWN cars... Oh well...

I want a BMW supercar so badly, im getting tired of these MB fans claiming that Benz is better because they have the SLR...

oooo! Actually, the M850CSi engine is modified by BMW MotorSport (only slightly) + the VIN actually says M8 + ONLY the M850CSi and E34 were actually assembled in the BMW MotorSport factory. All other M's were assembled in the regular factory.

It is always argued whether an 850CSi is a true M. I think that because the 'real' M8 was shelved due to cost and the downturn in people wanting supercars, people tend to dismiss the CSi as merely a two ton grand-tourer.

Well, I always smile when I blow away the M3's on the White Motorway in France. One guy thought it was a highly modified 850 (it's not). She's good for 188mph (303kph), which is stock for a CSi with no limiter! And off the mark, she really pulls.

This car is so much fun! 6 speed, lower and stiffer than a standard 8, massive M-Tech brakes, wider wheels and hydraulic rear wheel steering. If it isn't an M - it should be!

Any M3's M5's wanna race with a 12 year old, two ton car

...... I was only saying the opposite...that the letter ''M'' is not necessarily the only way to tell a true M-car! The 850CSi is fantastic (also: Alpina B12 Coupe with 430PS... ) and I hate how some people call them ''pimp cars'' I love their design and stance on the road. Here is a list of some other cool... ''no M'' cars but still developed by the M Department: '72 3.0CSL, '73 2002 Turbo (first ever turbo production car?), '76 530 ''Motorsport Limited Edition'' - S.Africa only, various other E12 5ers made in extremely limited numbers in the 70s plus some racecars.
Enjoy your CSi I'm sure some day it will be a sought-
after classic

Re: how many 840/850/850 csi /m8 were made?

I hear you 993... I think I got lost in translation
Actually, I have a '74 3.0CSi (love a CSL 'Batmobile'). Fantastic car and so much fun. Still has great lines and that motor... IMO one of the best BM's ever made (along with the 850CSi, of course).

Personally, I don't think BM have ever topped the 850CSi and I don't think they ever will. There was a rather poor attempt with the new Bangled! 645 but a recent review of both cars put the 8 ahead and likened the 6 to a new 6 series and not what some people think, the new '8'.

I believe that it is a future classic (possibly only 1400ish left worldwide) - but not sure it's a good investment as she keeps me poor
