Spare tire carrier replacement

I have an '02 XL Denali 1500. The spare tire carrier was broken (cable had snapped) prior to me buying it. As best I can find, the part number for it is: 15026912. I'm curious if any of the newer designs (such as part# 25974845) would fit. 2 reasons I'm asking, 1) the newer ones supposedly keep the tire from falling on the road if the cable were to break, and 2) they're cheaper than the original part number.

Living where road salt snacks on vehicles for 6 or 7 months out of the year has yielded no luck in finding a functional one by checking with the local salvage yards.

Right now the spare sits in the back, which is fine most of the time, but it takes up a good amount of space when packing for trips.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Spare tire carrier replacement

You'd have to ask the dealer. I had to replace one on my Suburban, and one on my Yukon. They are like gold in the wrecking yards and are stolen often, too. I paid about $200 installed at the GMC dealership (Fairway) in Las Vegas. I scoured the internet looking at all the different modifications of those hoists and finally decided it wasn't worth ordering the wrong thing. You also have to be sure your long handle fits the hoist because, believe it or not, there are several different end slots and connections.

Re: Spare tire carrier replacement

I just did one on an 06, and it was like $78 for the part, and 3 (yes, three) bolts. Put synthetic caliper grease on the cable, it won't wash away and help stop the rot.
