Nissan Frontier vs Toyota Tacoma

I currently own Silverado 1500 extended cab pickup, 4WD. It's OK truck, so far had been start and go (and classroom in small annoying repairs), but now that I have utility trailer for hauling dirt and such, it's simply too big for our needs. I am basically using is every other day as a commuter and "hauling air". It's good for winter time due to 4WD, but that's about it. Oh, yes, camping - we can pack a lot into it.

I am planning on selling it spring time and, being partial to Japanese makes, am debating between Tacoma and Frontier. I must have 4wd, V6 is likely to be absolute preference, and 4 door cab too. I am less concerned with gas costs, I am reimbursed for mileage.

What would you say about Tacoma? I am very good tree shade mechanic, but reliability is absolutely a must. I am likely to look at 2008-2009. Also, I am 6'5'' and very broad shouldered, sitting comfort is of concern, as I drive a lot.

Tacomas are also much higher priced. Much. Not sure if they were worth the several thousand tag difference.

I don't know enough about the current Nissan's to give you any meaningful comparisons.
In the past the Nissan's were under powered and under geared. That may not be the case now. The fact that Toyota's always retain a higher resale value speaks plenty.

Re: Nissan Frontier vs Toyota Tacoma

272 hp V6 will likely work for me. They also have a supercharged one.
My question is more towards reliability in general.
Yes, I know - that's why Tacomas are so pricy.

I own a 2007 tacoma 4wd with 130,000 miles on it no major issues so far. Besides normal maintenance , i have changed a u joint and a front wheel bearing.
The 5 speed auto is great, I have heard bad things about the 6 spd manuals. These trucks do not get great gas mileage, realistically 16 to21 depending on how you drive. Not sure if you offroad, but, I believe up 2008 had mechanical limited slip, in 2009 or 2010 they have atrac.
Rear leafs are weak, make sure it has the 4 leafs and not the 3 leaf pack. All I know about the nissan is that the radiator tanks have issue of cracking and letting colant and trans fluid mix. About a 4000 dollar trans overhaul. Other than that they seem solid, although I think tacomas are superior. Especially in offroad capabilities and aftermarket accesories available.

Re: Nissan Frontier vs Toyota Tacoma

Thank you. Regular maintenance is fine with me. I simply do not want to get into money pits.
Don't quite understand, how radiator TANK can let coolant into transmission. Likely, transmission fluid sub-radiator in main radiator. That I can see. Must be hit by something.
No, off roading is none of my concerns. I simply look into smaller truck, my Silverado is quite over-sized and air hauler.

Re: Nissan Frontier vs Toyota Tacoma

It is the transmission cooler inside the radiator that cracks and causes all the damage. The tcm is inside the transmission pan and gets fried along with the clutches letting go. I bypass the radiators cooler with an external one after rebuild, no chance of it happening again. Lol this happens across all the nissan truck, suv lines. I have seen to many for it to be isolated. I am a newb here, I wrote this to hopefully help any nissan owners . Just bypass the radiator and all will be good.
