article and pix of C12 ALMS-GTS racecar

After being built in Modena, Italy, tested at the Adria Circuit in Italy and launched to the European press in Hasslet, Belgium, Carsport America’s Chassis #1 Pagani Zonda is on its way to North America’s fabled Sebring International Raceway to debut in its very first race – the 2003 Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

The Pagani Zonda, inspired by none other than Juan Manuel Fangio, was created by Horacio Pagani at Pagani Automobili in Modena. Each of Pagani’s road cars are individually constructed and customized to each owners desires. Powered by a Mercedes-AMG V12, the road car delivers 550hp and has been praised in car and luxury magazines worldwide for its sleek styling, nimble handling and stunning speed.

Carsport Modena, created to build, develop and market the racing version of the Zonda, has been working tirelessly, alongside the exceptionally-skilled craftsmen at Pagani Automobili, and together they have completed the construction of Chassis #1 in time for Sebring’s legendary sports car classic.

The new American Le Mans Series entry, decked in eye-catching silver and blue race trim, was tested over two days at Italy’s Adria Circuit by two of its three Sebring drivers – Mike Hezemans and Anthony Kumpfen. By all accounts the test was very successful.

Next stop on the way to America was the race car’s European press launch in Hasslet, Belgium. The car was unveiled to an eager press contingent in grand style by Paul Kumpen and Mike and Toine Hezemans.

Also in attendance for the event was Carsport America owner Tom Weickardt, who will oversee its journey to Florida and helm its full 2003 ALMS campaign in the GTS category. Carsport America has also applied to race the new GTS competitor in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“I was anxious to see the race car after all these months of preparation,” said Carsport America owner Tom Weickardt. “The car looks absolutely beautiful – my partners at Carsport Modena and the wonderful people at Pagani have done a fantastic job. I can’t wait to get the car on the track at Sebring.”

The Zonda is scheduled to hit American terra firma on Tuesday at Miami’s International Airport, and then delivered to Sebring where it will be met by eager and anxious Carsport America team members. This will be Carsport America’s first “date” with the car – and their first opportunity to finalize the preparation of the car for its first testing on American soil – and for its maiden race in the once-around-the clock event.

C12 or C12S

Theoretically this car is the C12 and not the C12S since it is running with the 6L V12 and not the 7.3L V12??? Is the correct??

What are they actully referring to it as in conversation, the Zonda???

Just curious

Too bad the car didn't make the start... I feel sorry for the team, same for the guys who entered the Lister Storm. But, the team is (supposedly) going to run a few more American Le Mans races this year.
