04 maxima sl fuel smell in car
got a fuel smell in/outside the car with it running, more noticable while idling. hot or cold any time the blower is on fresh and it stops when you put it on recirc. also the fuel milage seems to be worse. NO CEL so im assuming that's clearing out any issues with evap. I checked it for fuel leaks and i see nothing. anyone have any ideas? no running issues, no smoking etc. just the smell and a little worse milage. maybe an injector ?

If small amount of gasoline leaks on hot engine, it vaporizes instantly w/o a trace. Long time leak collects visible dust pattern around/down from the leak spot. Can be hard to locate. Taking pictures via down-the-horse-barn-inserted camera/flash may open vistas not possible to see otherwise... Check all rubber hoses by bending and tighten clamps.

Re: 04 maxima sl fuel smell in car
also, check the fuel injectors another tell-tale are brown spots where the injector meets the intake manifold
they can be leaking at the fuel rail to the individual fuel injectors... o rings on my nissan had dry-rotted on 2 of my 4 fuel injectors and i just replaced all of them for piece of mind... (this was on a 240sx) |

agree with the other posts. only thing i can add is concerning evap and ses light. the evap monitor may not run if your driving conditons don't meet requirements to run the monitor...ie. short trips, starting after a hot soak, fuel level over 3/4 or under 1/4 tank...etc. wonder if a fuel pressure leakdown test would show anything?? |

Re: 04 maxima sl fuel smell in car
i did some checking on the car finally, and it looks like both the fuel dampers have dirt and debris stuck all around them so im guessing thats where my problem is, i am replacing them this weekend.
