Cirrus Transmission Problems

We have a 1996 Chrysler Cirrus with an automatic transmission problem. When we start the car, it works fine until we bring the car to a stop. The car down shifts okay (for the most part). Then, when accelerating from the stop, the transmission will not shift out of first gear. This happens more than half of the time we bring the car to a stop. We have to pull over and shut the car off completely, wait a few seconds, then restart the car and proceed...until the next time we come to a stop, then we have to pull over again and repeat. Sometimes when slowing down, the transmission "clunks" into first gear. When that happens, we KNOW the problem will occur on that acceleration. I have tried shifting the lever down to L and back up during the problem but that has no effect.

It is erratic and doesn't always do this.

The problem has also occurred when driving on the highway and it goes into neutral. Only a complete restart will bring it back to normal.

Ive heard that its a sensor issue. If so, which sensor(s) please?
