Question: Regular gas in Diesel vehicle

I know this is the wrong forum...but i need an answer TONIGHT....a friend put about a quater of a tank of regular fuel in a deisel truck....should we siphon it out or will it be okay....I know he's a dumbass.

I think it will most likely not run so you may have to siphon it.

Good question....I know that diesel in a gas engine will do very bad things but don't know for sure about gas in a diesel.

Diesels work by compression and gasoline doesn't blow up from compression alone. I'd think (aka guess) that the gas wouldn't burn at all and would make the diesel run rough.

Best to drain it, and the dumbass.

haha yea..i told him to get it siphoned...and wouldn't it be just on top being lighter?????? or the whole tank???? Thanks alot

good point.....I'd do a little test to be sure, like some diesel and gas in a jar or something, but excellent idea, should be able to siphon off the top and not have to waste the whole tank. Give it some time to settle though.

Drain it, otherwise it's going to fuck up the seals on the fuel pump, then you'll have a much bigger problem on your hands.

I say, as long as you haven't tried to run it with the gas in the tank, if you syphon out the contents (all of them) you should be okay.

Just add fresh fuel (diesel!) to the tank and let her go. Just don't run the motor with no fuel, cause if get air into the line, you'll have to bleed the injectors and that can be a pain in the ass.

If he ran it, everythings going to have to be drained. My friend put diesel in her civic once and it had to be towed.

Lol, I saw a video of a diesel car on the highway filled with gas. Not a pretty sight, never seen so much smoke before.

it was really only 8 gallons in however big a tank so not too bad i guess....

actually gasoline does detonate on compression, that's how you get knocking. if the air gets hot enough it'll ignite the gasoline.

since gasoline is more combustible than diesel (by that i mean it'll burn more quickly and easily) it might not burn but explode and cause damage to the internals. also it could mess up a bunch of stuff in your fuel system.

have the tank drained and fill it up with diesel.

Not more than about 10% though, and even though running that level for a long period can be bad for the fuel pump/line/injector seals etc. Especialy if its a modern unleader gasoline, which often contains lots of corrosive solvents.

You also need to be aware that the petrol will clean out any carbon depositis in the combustion chamber, good thing on a newer engine, bad on an old one. Iv seen an old high millage diesel engine that was only holding compression because of the carbon build up. Someone half filled it with petrol, and drove it half way accross the city, where all the carbon deposits broke up and the engine lost all compresion.

Im no expert here. If the gas is mixed with the diesel, when the diesel combust it might combust the regular gasoline. Like someone else said it will run hot and not sound to good. If it happened once I dont think damage should be a problem. Definatly drain the bitch, and slap the fool.

diesel fuel injection components (ie injection pump, injectors) have very tight clearances off the top of my head i think .001-.003 of an inch diesel fuel has lubricating properties that prevent metal to metal contact of these component's internal workings which would cause them to seize gasoline depletes the lubricating properties of diesel fuel (its more like an oil gasoline a solvent)
