96 Mercury Sable Check Engine Codes

hello , when i scan my car to see which check engine engine came up...i get three

P0443 -Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit
P0402 -Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected
P0401 -Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected

then i was checking around the car to see if i see anything misplaced or something....could it be this which seems to be a mis connected cable..

Re: 96 Mercury Sable Check Engine Codes

The P0401 and P0402 are very likely to be due to a failed Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor. These are known to fail and cause those two codes. The parts store may refer to this part as the "EGR Position Sensor" or similar.

The item in your photos is the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve. It would appear the rubber grommet has degraded and is allowing oil to leak past it. I'd suggest you replace the grommet and the PCV valve, but I do not expect that will fix any of your codes.

The P0443 code is related to the valve that vents the fuel tank vapors to the intake manifold to be burned off by the engine rather than emitted in to the atmosphere. I'd suggest fixing the P040x codes and the PCV valve and grommet, clear the codes, then complete a drive cycle and see if the P0443 comes back.

Re: 96 Mercury Sable Check Engine Codes

replaced the dpfe sensor and the pcv valve....i went to 4 different autoparts stores and none of them carried the pcv valve rubber grommet....i deleted codes and drove the car for 30 minutes....all good till next morning going to work...the p0443 came on again...could it be the rubber grommet needs to be brand new?

Re: 96 Mercury Sable Check Engine Codes

Not likely to be related to the PCV grommet. At this point I think the only downside to that worn gasket will be the mess it will make of the engine compartment.

Per the factory service manual, below are the possible causes of the P0443:
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0443 indicates a failure in the EVAP canister purge valve circuit.
  • VPWR circuit open.
  • EVAP canister purge valve circuit open.
  • EVAP canister purge valve circuit shorted to PWR GND.
  • EVAP canister purge valve circuit shorted to VPWR.
  • Damaged EVAP canister purge valve.
  • Damaged PCM.

Re: 96 Mercury Sable Check Engine Codes

I recently changed the pcv grommet on my Windstar with the 3.0. Take the old one out and go to Oreilys, etc. and look in the Dorman help section to match up. I do not remember number, when I find the number I will post.

Re: 96 Mercury Sable Check Engine Codes

Went early in the morning to buy the EVAP canister purge valve ..got it for like 70$ bucks...when i located the one in the car to change it.....i saw that it wasent even connected....this whole time....so i connected it...cleaned the code...drove the car for 30 minutes..all good ....basically went straight the the smog test....past it in and in 3 minutes i was out of there.....then went straight to autozone to return the one i bought cuz i didnt need it at all....i couldnt beleive it but my guess is...probalty some unscrupulous mechanic discconnected it and hide the wire under a bigger wire and trid to charge the previous owner a lot of money to fix it...thats why they sold the car to me..they didnt want to pay wut the mechanic had ask them so they sold it....unbeleivable

Re: 96 Mercury Sable Check Engine Codes

Awesome that you were able to get it fixed for so little and pass the smog test! Thank you for following up on what you found the issue to be.
