hard starting...

2000 dodge grgrand caravan...3.3 flex fuel, getting hard to start...acts like it is starving for fuel...or maybe lacking spark...it turns over several times, then i let off the ignition, then try again, it starts up but stumbles until i give it any gas. any suggestions from past experiences, or just suggestions that may cause this?

Re: hard starting...

It's possible you might have some clogged fuel injectors

You need fuel, air and spark to start. If your fuel pressure is low it will be hard to start. I just had a v6 with low fuel pressure that was hard to start and would not idle. You can check pulses going to the injestors with a 12v bulb. Unplug the injector and insert the bulb into the plug. You may have to use jumper wires and paper clips. I had a Taurus that a rat had eaten the air filter all to pieces. The pieces got stuck in the air flow sensor and blocked air to the engine. Sometimes it would run ok and so times it would not even idle. The spark can be checked by removing sparkplug wire from plug and inserting a screwdrive. Hold the screwdriver close but not touching metal and try to start engine (don't touch the metal part of the screwdriver unless you want a shock!)
Let me know what you find.

Re: hard starting...

dependig on your driving habits, hyway or city, check your fuel filter if it has never been replaced. For $15.00 you can buy a injector cleaner for your next fill up, ****not your 2 dollar STP injector fluid.***. Take it out on the byway and drive for at least 20 miles. While driving, speed up to 70 or 80 miles per hour an then let your engine slow you down. The compression from your engine will help to clear any carbbon or junk in your combustion chamber. It really should help. P.s, change your filter after using a good cleaner. good luck and reply if it helps. Wayne
