GTI or VR6? mpg vs power

Im planning to get an MK4 gti soon. However im still having trouble deciding whether to get a 1.8T or a VR6. Im a daily driver and i love power but i also love fuel efficiency.

A Mk IV? Correct me if I am wrong. Mk IV was plagued with several problems.
