Nissan 240SX Fuel Pump Issues

about 3 weeks ago my car stopped and wouldn't turn over. after running through spark and air, it left fuel being the culprit. I couldn't hear my fuel pump activate when turning on the car, so i figured that is what it could be. I could kick the fuel tank and then the motor would start turning again. The pump had about 100k on it so i decided that it was time to replace it. I replaced the fuel pump and strainer, but then that replaced pump failed after 1 week (on my drive home from work).

To confirm that it was an issue with the pump and not a relay, i removed the pump from the tank and directly connected it to my battery using jumper cables. The motor wouldn't turn. With the cables connected, i could thump the pump and could hear it try to turn. After a couple more hits, it would start working. I reinstalled that pump into the car and could make it about 1 mile before it would fail. I removed the pump, attached jumper cables, thumped it until it started turning again, reinstalled it and headed for home again. I had to do this about 5 times until I left it in a housing track and got rescued by my wife.

I got a new pump and decided to replace the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator as well in case they were causing the pump to strain too hard. This latest pump has less than 20 miles on it and I don't have much confidence that it won't experience the same symptoms as above. On the way in to work (about 8 miles), i experienced a moment where the car wouldn't accelerate, once i rounded a corner, i was able to then go back up to speed.

I'm looking for advice on what can kill a fuel tank in less than 1 week of driving? Voltage? Something else with the fuel system? My car has over 300k.

Thanks,

Jason

It's possible you got a bad pump. If you have any more trouble check your electrical connections. Also I wouldn't test the pump dry as I think they are designed to run submersed in gasoline.

Re: Nissan 240SX Fuel Pump Issues

I didn't run it dry for more than a couple of seconds, just enough to get it to turn again. When I got home, I took out the pump and placed it in a bucket of water and did the jumper cable trick again. After about 30 seconds of run time, the pump began to struggle and after about 1 minute it stopped.

My next task is to check the voltage and current to the pump.

Thanks for the advice.
