I had an 88 M6 for a few years (wish I still had it). It was a beautiful automobile. While I owned it I subscribed to the Big Coupe Group (do a search on BCG). The number of vehicles in this country was a topic discussed on occasion. The number is 1036. Many of them have been converted to track cars, and some have gone to the scrap yard. It would be interesting to know how many are still in existence.

Here is a photo. You would have to see one in the flesh to appreciate it. Many things besides looks make this vehicle beautiful. The classic styling is timeless. The off white interior is a striking contrast to the exterior color. It drew far more attention than my 90 Z car, especially from the women who would make over the car while their husbands steamed. I would just smile.

It is a luxury sport coupe that rides like a Caddy, corners and performs like a sport car, and is electronically limited to 156 mph. The body is very rigid and with the automatic leveling system it corners flat with very little body roll. For a 4,000 lb car the handling is uncanny. When you shift the transmission, the gears snick into place and you know you are driving a finely engineered car. The engine is a race bred dohc straight six that develops 256 hp (mine was chipped and developing an estimated 275). The big pistons generate a prodigious amount of torque. The M6 demands to be driven hard or will penalize you with carbon buildup and power loss if you don't. At lower speeds the steering seems a little heavy and the heavy solid car seems to lumber a tad like a tank. As you increase the speed the car takes on a completely different character, it feels increasingly lighter, wider, and lower, well balanced and glued to the ground like a cat after prey. The faster you go the better the car becomes. It begs to be driven. It's as if it's saying to you, "C'mon - faster, faster, faster! Let's GO!!"

The interior is wonderful with a decent sound system, front and back air conditioning (with an integral cooler for a few sodas), trip computer, and electronic monitoring and reporting of just about everything you can think of including tail light bulbs. It has 11 way adjustable electric leather Recaro's, and is simply the most comfortable car I've ever driven. The only downside I experienced was with electrical gremlins which I traced to the car's gounds. Afyter I re-did the grounds the electrical system worked flawlessly. The M6 is truly a beautiful car.

uhhh, there was NEVER a real M6....
the name of this 6-series BMW coupe was 635CSi, i don´t believe its under the name m6 in the usa...

Yes, there most certainly was a real M6. That's like saying that there never was an M5, only a 535i. There were a lot of differences between the M6 and the 635CSi.

If you look carefully at the picture of the beautiful red M6 above, you can see the original factory M6 badge on the front grill.

Depends on from which side of the Atlantic ocean you look at things....

from the European side... the top of the line was the M635CSi - but if you looked at the back and the front grille you can only see an ''M'' and not the full type name ''M635CSi'' though (DO NOT confuse these with the plain 635CSi's please!)
from the US side.... the EXACT same car (well, ok give or take a few hp , bumper inches and side-lights naturally) was simply called the M6 and apparently (as I myself haven't seen any US versions) those carry proper ''M6'' badges.
at around the same time back in Europe to confuse things even more there were 535i's (E12-very rare and E28 body styles), M535i's (E12/E28 and again simply badged ''M'') AND M5's (E28)!!!

SO! The forthcoming brand new M6 will be the first M6 for the European market!

What about the U.K.? Are they still considered part of "the European market?"





Note the "proper M6 badge" on the grills of both of those 1986 M6's. Note the right hand drive on both cars. BMW built 450 UK versions of the M6 between 1984 - 1989.
