Supercar v8 Flames out the sides

Yeah
i was watching speedvision last night and they where featuring a race with v8 supercars, fords and one more make which i cant remember. The cool things was that those car i beleieve had exausts in the bottom of the sides in the cars, shooting out flames, not little either, big ones, it looked so cool!!

And im wondering whats the purpose of this and how is this possible, is this doable for a civic mod?

Thanks for any help

small puffs of flames is usually due to engine backfire, or a hot exhaust recombusting any unburnt fuel that passes out the exhaust, common on turbo motors.

large flames are due to some guy showboating by running a rich mixture and installing a sparkplug in the tailpipe to ignite the mix for dramatic, yet useless, effect

i think you got it wrong, this wasnt streetracing, this was trackracing, so this had a purpose, as every car was doing this

if you read the first part of drift's post, he explains the real reason why these high HP cars do this.

You also see it alot on Rally cars. The culprit is a small device that sets off many small explosions in the exhuast tract before the turbo. The idea is to keep the turbo spooled when you let off the gas, which is why you see it flame out when they slow down to enter a corner. The by-product of this device are the flames that sometimes escape the exhuast pipes.

On funny cars and dragsters, you'll see a lot of flames come out the side, basically because its the header coming right out the side of the car

and funny cars run on nitro glyscerin and a lot of it.

I have seen kits on groupbuycenter that do this for you on a street car but it is pointless

wrong.

some run on alcohol. but i believe you're trying to say "nitromethane", not nitro glycerin. nitro glycerin is for patients with heart palpitations.

it's also the key ingredient of dynamite, TNT. NitroMethane is right, & after they adjust the mixture, better stand back - it'll burn your eyes & make you look like Niagara Falls.

Geek Moment:

Actualy TNT stands for TriNitroToluene and is a key ingrediant in many explosives. In its refined powder form, TNT, is what you call dynamite.

End Geek Moment.

that motorace u saw was a Australia V8 supercar race...those are all mainly Ford Vs Holdens and Holdens are Australian made cars running on big GM V8 engines...so those flames u see blowing out of those 600hp+ V8 cars are from you american V8 GM muscle car engines..

what about this device before a turbo that sets off explosions? what are you talking about? if you set off a small "explosion" in front of a turbo, you would suck a flame into the motor and blow the top off.

the reason a turbo shoots flames out the side is b/c it has a blowoff valve, which is raw exh gas coming out, which then combusts itself like drift said.

so what is happening on the supercars is a basic straight exhaust with a very raw a/f mix and no catalytic converters...

catalytic converters produce "light off" with exh gas also, so you have some little flames in there, but not as far back, b/c all the rich parts of the exh gas that can burn are burnt by the time you hit the muffler and tip...

the flames are mainly when the cars decelerate also, which is when your foot comes off the gas, creating a vacuum from the exh that sucks the a/f mix out before being burnt, (not all, but some) this burns off in the exh, and with sucha short exh pipe, that is why it is shootin flames... same with a turbo blowoff valve... if it is not recirculated into the exh pipe/downpipe.

i still wanna know about that "DEVICE" though... interesting...

Its exactly what he described. While the driver is off the throttle they ignite some fuel in the exhaust in order to keep enough gasses flowing though the turbo in order to keep it spooled up, so when the driver gets back on the throttle there is no lag. Its called an anti-lag turbo. Works pretty well, but is very loud.
