Exclamation 85 Cabrio over heating help please

I have recently purchased a 1985 vw Cabrio, I am baffled by what is going on.. The car overheats within minutes, there is no heat inside the car the oil light flashes and buzzes but there is no water in the oil and the rad is ice cold, the water pump was just changed less then 1 month ago is this a head gasket problem or something else? can anyone help?

Re: 85 Cabrio over heating help please

It could be a head gasket problem, if the combusted gases are leaking into the water jacket it can cause the water in the engine to heat up very fast. One test you can do is when the car is cooled down take the radiator cap off and start the car, if the water blows out of the open radiator it is the head gasket.

the other, more simple thing, is the termostate is stuck shut. A over heating motor and cold radiator is a sign of a stuck thermostate.

I do not know what is up with the oil light you might have two different problems. Hope this helps.

It could be the thermostat or a clogged radiator since you already have had the water pump changed.
