Rear brakes are driving me insane!
hi i have a 2004 chevrolet colorado extended cab base model 2 wheel drive, and ive been having problems with my rear brakes since day 1 (it is a second hand truck) and well preety much what heppens is when i hit the breaks the truck stumbles and shakes and what not, now im well aware those are all the symptoms of warped rotors and ovaled or deformed drums, so the first thing i did was replce my entire brake system.... well new front rotors new rear drums and shoes, and well the front brakes work like magic , but the rear brakes despite everything being new THEY STILL SHAKE AND WOBBLE! so same thing as before its as if the drums are defective, so i ran them on on my lathe and using a dial indicator i left them dead acurate and true, within 1 thousands of an inch actually =], and wouldent you know it as soon i i put them back same story shaknig and wobnlin, so i know its not the drums,....what else could it be?....for the record my axel is not bent.... HELP!!!!

Re: Rear brakes are driving me insane!
I've had to file the edges of some brake shoes this is the edge as they weren't done properly. Some places can arc them to the drum. Filing always worked for my purpose.
Also their is a front and back show look at your manual and make sure this is correct. |

Re: Rear brakes are driving me insane!
The 4 shoes are not identical the shoe length is shorter on one. Their should be two of each. Its best to do one side at a time so you can look how they were set. The springs and self adjusters have to be put on correctly. If you don't do it every day its easy to get mixed up. I sand the leading edge of the shoe so it doesn't grab.

Re: Rear brakes are driving me insane!
Just file the narrow part of the shoe top and bottom a slight taper.

Re: Rear brakes are driving me insane!
to clarify:
Is the shake and pulsation felt: 1. in the brake pedal 2. through the body and seat 3. steering wheel When you apply only the e-brake when road testing is the symptom still there? If brake wheel cylinders are moving normally and rest of brake system checks out perform a suspension check. suspension components that are not operating properly may cause a disturbance to the vehicle during brake application. |

Re: Rear brakes are driving me insane!
check your rear driveshaft u-joints. The drive line angle will change as you brake as the nose of the rear diff drops which would cause a worn joint to cause a vibration. Is a quick and easy check and at least will rule it out.

Re: Rear brakes are driving me insane!
I know you said its not a bent axle. Did you take a runout measurement of the axle flange to rule it out. just that the symptoms sure sound like that it what it is.
