Normal RPM per MPH?

What's a normal healthy RPM number for, say, 30 miles per hour, 40, 50, even 60+ miles per hour?

Seems like my car might be revving a little high at normal speeds. I have a 1996 2.4L.

So when I'm going like 30 MPH should it be revving around 1.8K RPMs? When I'm on the freeway and driving around 65 MPH what should it be revving at?

Any help or info would be great. A Google search doesn't really yield direct info on this.

I'm not so much bothered about wear on the engine as I am it EATING GAS.

Re: Normal RPM per MPH?

What year and what transmission? An A/T will set a code if there's an "incorrect gear ratio" detected.

My '04 w/ M/T turns just under 3k RPM at 80 MPH and gets 39 MPG. IIRC, just over 2k RPM and 42 MPG at 65MPH. That's with all synthetic fluids, a perfect alignment and a good tune.

Re: Normal RPM per MPH?

I now have the same issue...only with a GM 2.2L 4 cylinder.

It's revving around 3000rpm at just over 60MPH!!

That can't be right, can it?
