Juha Kankkunen Toyota Celica Twincam Turbo Beemax

I wish a very Happy New Year to this forum members! With this build I would like to represent Juha Kankkunen's first WRC victory The Aoshima/Beemax kit itself is an excellent scale reproduction of the original car, which is a good enough base for an OOB build. The proportion looks spot on to me, I did not bother adding or taking away 1-2 millimeters here and there, as few builders did. I only added or changed very few things to make the kit look closer to a race battered, weathered finish, typical for a Safari rallycar.

Small update on the differential. This will be really dirty, so not much of it will be visible at the end...

Hi mrceej, in rough rallies like in finland greece or the safari where the differential is put up to an extreme torsion as well, screws tend to come loose and with it the diff looses the oil. It was a standard prevention in the 70'-80's Here is the original:

Love the progres so far. It's a shame they included the front exhaust section as part of the floor moulding. I intend to cut this off and redo it.
The weathering looks excellent, what materials are you using?
Also, what fabric material have you used on the transmission tunnel?
Keep the photos coming!

Re: Juha Kankkunen Toyota Celica Twincam Turbo Beemax

Hello Kaj45rpm. Thanks for the comment! The weathering was done with MIG "Europe Dust" (P028) pigments which strangely looks spot on for representing the african desert reddish dust. I brushed it on with a mix of water and liquid soap. After drying, I cleaned the excess with a thick brush. The transmission isolation is a self adhesive T2M seatbelt material (T2M-2011-G1)

Re: Juha Kankkunen Toyota Celica Twincam Turbo Beemax

Nice, I was just asking because we use it a lot in the industry I work in. Never seen someone do it in scale so I was asking just to be sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing, very nice touch! I don't know if it's something you can easily redo but the picture you provided confirmed something I thought might add some value. The wires (at least as I see them at work) tend to alternate entry/exit on the bolt head for a string of bolts and result in a zig zag, same way you see in the picture. On your model they appear to go just around the perimeter.

Re: Juha Kankkunen Toyota Celica Twincam Turbo Beemax

Hi mrceej,
Well observed that the wire actually goes through the boltheads to prevent them from turning. I put 0.4mm screws in the differential so it causes some problems. My smallest drill-bit is 0.3mm, I am not at all at that level of modeler who can drill a hole in a 0.4 screwhead and at the end it will be on the underside of the chassis, covered with mud...
