How to Post pictures onto this Forum

Take a DIGITAL picture or scan a real photograph and save it as a jpg file.
Remember where you saved it to....

Try to convert the photo to 72 dots per inch and 6 to7 inches high using some graphics program -
Go ahead and edit arrows, explanations, a date, your "Handle", captions,
WHATEVER into the picture, then save that file (remember the name you used).

Here is an example of some graphics editing I did and posted here a while ago:

This particular picture is 8 inches wide by 6 inches high and is 72 pixels/inch
done with PhotoShop LE and saved as a jpg file before uploading to Imageshack.

If a picture file is too large, it sort of blows the Forum page up too big and makes it
difficult for folks to page thru the Forum - "Trust me"

Then go to

www.imageshack.us
or
http://s70.photobucket.com

and join it. That only requires a valid E-Mail address. I use my Hotmail address. They are FREE

Once you are a member, you can 'upload' any number of images to that site FREE.

Once you "upload" the image(s), you are given several "Links" which you can copy and
paste into this or any other Forum.

When you click on UPLOAD in Imageshack, be sure to check the box labeled
"Remove size/resolution bar from thumbnail" - it should have a check in the box.

That stops it from putting image size numbers under your posted photos.
You don't want that !

Here is how you use them:

Click on the little tiny "i" in the photo you want to put into a Forum or E-Mail.

A new window opens up.

Use the IMG links right at the top of the window that opens when you click on "i" in the
small windows with your photos. The one labeled "forums". See the picture above.

Be sure the "Full Size" box is not checked!

Highlight the IMG (Forums) line and press Ctrl-C - that copies the line to your computer's memory,
otherwise known as the "Clipboard."

They are the [img].......info.......[img] type of links. Here is what one looks like:
IMG http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/6...edframefv5.jpg /IMG
I removed the brackets that make it work here....

Then go to "Post Reply" here and write your message.

Within that text you wrote PASTE the img link from Imageshack.us that you copied.
Put the cursor where you want and press ctrl-V to paste the link into your text.

Finish with as many photo links as you want, then save the changes or post.

Then when your post comes up, the Forum gets the image from ImageShack.us and
plops it into the post.

Try it...if you screw up, simply try again and use the EDIT function on this Forum until
you get it to work correctly.

Then - write down how you did it!

That helps me at least, because I have a mind like a sieve...I forget quickly and writing it
down keeps me from "rediscovering the wheel" each time I want to use something...

For E-Mails - use the http: link and then the person receiving just clicks the
link and the image shows up on their browser.

If you want to post an image here that you NEED BE LARGE, then post the http: link and tell
folks to click on the link. Then the big image can load as a separate page all by itself.
The person can then scroll thru the big image and see what they want.

This way, you can send images anywhere w/o having to attach them each time.

Imageshack.us and Photobucket give you Images, links, thumbnails, etc that you can use ANYWHERE !

BUT - some Forums use different formats - you need to find out what format to use for
each different Forum. E-Mail can't use the IMG format - they use the http format.

There are quite a lot of these FREE image and file "Hosting" sites on the Internet.
They have Terabyte Hard Drives for storing Hideously large amounts of data.

You can store Pictures, Video Files (DVD, AVI, MPG, etc), Audio files, Data Files....you name it.
Most are free, some require payment....
Corporations do this as a "service" - why?! ...Only God Knows!

Remember - there are COPYRIGHT laws....so don't post business's pictures and claim them as
your own. Maybe cite where you got the image to keep the Lawyers at bay.

DoctorBill

PS - You can save images from here (or any other web site) by right clicking on the image and
use "Save as..." in Windows.

Nice post DOC! You trying out for a moderator position?

I was going to use my Earthlink acct to host my pics, but may use Photobucket instead. Thanks for the FYI about it!

Re: How to Post pictures onto this Forum

Yes...all those "hosting" web sites are nice.

I have 437 images on Imageshack - most of them were put there for this forum!

My only concern is....when and if Imageshack goes belly up or is bought out by
K-Mart or Yang Soong Boingh in China, will they just dump the images?

All the threads with our posts would be left hanging out to dry.

After all, they are Corporate "Free" Web services. That means someone will
mess with them and screw everything up.

I heard Photobucket was bought out by "Myspace" corporation.

http://valleywag.com/tech/exclusive/...ace-258222.php

What does THAT mean.....another 29,000 sex offenders added to the list?
Who owns 'Myspace.com" - Fred Flintstone? Angelina Jolie? Jason Bourne?

Anyway...thanks.

I had to struggle to figure out how to do the photo business thing.

Trial & error - reinvent the wheel, as it were.

Maybe this will get put up on top as a "Sticky Note".

I asked one of the Moderators about it.

We'll see.

Yep, nice post indeed. I may even borrow it elsewhere. As for moderator status, HA. We only give those to those that don't do any work.

(Just joking mods, don't shoot me)

In all seriousness, I have been meaning to make Bill a mod for quite some time now, just haven't had the time. I guess now is as good as any.

This is why I always keep a spare copy of the image elsewhere in the event the photo hosting site goes belly up. One can also keep the images on their own homepage.

Re: How to Post pictures onto this Forum

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried to register with Imageshack lately?

I registered but never got their validation email. I have been unable to login or get a response from their customer support other than the automated reply to my yahoo account. The email I registered under gets no response at all, even from the automated thingamajiggy.

I do not have an AOL account so I know that's not the problem. The fact that I get their automated messages tells me cookies aren't the problem.

But then again, I get an error message when I use Firefox but IE sends the message through. But it's still only the automated reply.

I'm just wondering if this is some sort of corporate shakeup or something?

Or is everyone just on vacation this being August?

Re: How to Post pictures onto this Forum

Been busy with my son and his fiance visiting, it is the end week of summer
session in my Chem Class, my cruise control got wacked, and so I am behind.

I was planning on copying the essential message of 8:50 AM, on 8-8-07 and
putting it into a new Thread and immediately making it a "Sticky Post" that
has no reply (versus the one about Mail order that anyone can reply to).

I will change the Title in some small way. "Posting Pictures - A "How To"

Then this thread will disappear down the list....to eventually die of never being
read again.

If that is OK, I will do it when I have time to learn all the ins and outs of being
a Moderator".

Re: How to Post pictures onto this Forum

Anyhoo, back to my question.

I did a little googling and found this from a couple of months ago:

http://digg.com/security/ImageShack_...y_Just_for_fun

I don't know exactly how reliable this is but I did see some other criticisms of Imageshack. So for anyone considering registering, this might be something to take into consideration.

I have not been able to contact customer service there at all and perhaps it's a good thing.

I take it that no one has tried to register there so consider this a heads up.

Re: How to Post pictures onto this Forum

Well, that's nice to know.....is there anything in this world that is sacrosanct?

Dumb question.....!

So - if anyone reading this knows of another Picture Hosting Site besides the
Imageshack.us and Photobucket sites (That Work Well!), please be so kind
as to post the links here and I will add them to my original thread as alternative
Hosting sites.

I read way's digg.com link and saw several picture "Hosting" sites mentioned:

http://www.xs.to
http://www.supload.com
http://www.pwnjoo.com
http://www.onedump.com/
http://picasaweb.google.com/

Some I found by Googling:
http://www.smugmug.com/
http://hosting.ogli.net/
http://www.bluehost.com/.....(Pay Site - $7/month)
http://www.filenanny.com/
http://www.deadzoom.com/home...(Pay Site)
http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/
http://fileave.com/
http://www.mynetimages.com/
The list seems endless.
Some of these may be defunct at some future date....(???)
If it is free, you get what you pay for.

Remember - doing anything on the Internet is like doing it in Central Park in New York.
Everybody sees it. Use at your own recognizance...user beware, etc., etc., etc.

Nothing is perfect.....except me (of course).

Re: How to Post pictures onto this Forum

I signed up with photobucket and a friend of mine uses Fotki:

http://www.fotki.com/us/

PictureTrail has been around since 1998:

http://www.picturetrail.com/

Probably the best thing to do to protect yourself is to google the service you're thinking of signing up with to see if anything negative comes up but as long as they only ask for an email address and username to sign up with, I don't think there's much to worry about but better to be safe I guess.
