1970 Porsche 908-2 from LeMans
I started this build for the ACME Model Palooza, and ended up not going to Veyron's house for the Palooza, but started the build anyway. As it ended up, I couldnt finish in 24 hours, due to having to paint three colors and due to high humidity, the paint looked bad. I decided to ditch the 24 hour deadline and do it right, or I wouldnt be satisfied.
This model represents the third place finisher and first place prototype car in the 1970 LeMans race. Its a UMI Porsche 908 resin kit. It took a full week to get it to the primer stage and test fitted. If anyone has built a UMI kit, they know what I mean. Here's most of the parts, ready for paint. I made a few parts myself to improve the kit, like brake disks and calipers and axles. After painting and decalling. The decaling resulted in tense moments as a few of them were falling apart. Clearcoating is a necessity now. Next thing to do is attach the rear fins and spoiler tabs, a few more decals and clearcoat. |

Re: 1970 Porsche 908-2 from LeMans
Looks great so far; one of the things about these 24 hour builds is the kit selection has to be something that lends itself to this style build. You really went all-out to get a Umi kit ready for a quick build! This one is probably best done w/your traditional care and style. Decals are a real tough area; as Eric found w/his GT40 the white decals weren't opaque enough, and he decided against doing them OOB for the LeMans build and doing them correct later on. I had some tense moments w/my rear decal on my Jag; I didn't think it would conform but Micro Sol did it's job.
We missed you, can't blame you for not wanting to drive the extra 2 hours w/the last minute change of venue.

Great subject. Thanks for sharing this unique model with us. Zoom-Zoom is right. This kit deserves to be taken with care! Your work on the color scheme is outstanding! Keep it up!

Added the tail feathers and decaling is complete. The gray panel behind the number simulates a reflective panel for number visibility.

Great start and nice subject choice. I've seen couple of UMI kits and by todays standards their castings were really bad, how was this?

Re: 1970 Porsche 908-2 from LeMans
Really bad.
The panel lines arent straight (I rescribed them). The body is not symmetrical where it should be. The exhaust pipes were omitted. The kit wheels were extremely poor, so I substituted some Fisher wheels. Veyron mentioned he had a LMM kit of this car. It should be a lot better quality. I got this kit at a good price and its not too common, so I was a sucker for it. |

Looking good Ken. I didn't quite get my LeMans build finished either, although it was more of a choice than a timing issue.
Looking forward to seeing more progress on your build.

Whatever the limitations of the kit, you sure aren't letting them hold you back. Looks superb already as just a decalled shell.
A very interesting subject, LMM make a kit too hey... |
