Problems with rear brake light and turn signal

I posted this in the Plymouth forums (I have a 98 Neon) but got no responses for a long time, so I'm posting it here. I would really appreciate any help.

A few days ago I noticed that my left rear brake light, left rear turn signal, and center high mount stop lamp weren't working.

So I went to the store and bought the appropriate bulbs. I replaced them all and only the center high mount stop lamp worked.

What's weird is that my tail light (which is the same as the rear brake light) works, but it won't increase the light intensity when I push the brake pedal... and the turn signal still doesn't work even with a new bulb.

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.
A tailight (park lamps) is not the same circuit as a brake light, so the above is NOT true- and is not weird.

Your car uses dual filament brake-turn/tail lamp bulbs. Do you have the correct bulb? is it the same as the other side?

Does the front turn signal work on that side? If so, problem is in the rear.

Check the dark green/red wire for voltage at the left rear lamp socket with brakes applied,or turn signal on.

Thanks for the response.

I do have the correct bulbs (I've triple-checked), and they are the same as the other side.

There are two bulbs on each side: one which is the tail light and the brake light, and one which is the turn signal.

The right tail light/rear brake light and the right rear turn signal work just fine.

On the left side, the bulb lights up for the tail light but will not increase the intensity of light when I press the brake pedal (it's the same bulb). And the left turn signal also doesn't work, even after replacing the bulb.

However, both front turn signals work fine (except the left one blinks really fast).

Re: Problems with rear brake light and turn signal

Do you have the bulb inserted correctly? Confirm that the dual filament bulb is NOT in the back-up lamp socket, but is in the stop/turn - park lamp socket.

The reason the front flashes rapidly is that the circuit is NOT seeing the rear brake light filament resistance. There is an issue with the dark green with red wire at the rear tail lamp assembly- please confirm 12v there when brake pedal is pushed or left turn signal is flashing.

Also the wiring diagram says you have two bulbs on either side- one bulb with two filaments has the park lamp filament and turn signal/stop light filament and the other bulb is your back-up light (single filament)

Re: Problems with rear brake light and turn signal

i just got a problems with brake pads replacement and lucky to have EST 201 brake pads replacement and adjust tool from online shop, it supports basic setting of rear brake calipers after changing brake discs/pads, and can read and clears EPB/SBC trouble codes.

Re: Problems with rear brake light and turn signal

You could also have a wire rubbed through somewhere thats grounding the circuit

Re: Problems with rear brake light and turn signal

hhmmm.... brake light wiring goes through the turn signal switch for the rear
going to need a test light or a known good turn signal switch that you can plug in real quick and test to see if it works with the test light key on the turn on the left or right turn signal, at connector plug on the steering column probe each of the wires you should have 2 of them flashing - one flashing,,, needs a new switch
two flashing,,, bulb bad or the wiring prob form the connector to back lights

check for broken wiring in the loom in the trunk especially if you have trailer wiring added aftermarket if wires are soldered into the original wiring they occasionally break if unsupported. perhaps confirm the new bulbs operate by inserting them in the other side that is working
