Honda RA 272 paint shade

so. I am curious what you guys think about tamiyas paint choice for this F1 racer. in instructions there is TS7 (racing white) indicated. isnt this color too yellowish? from what I saw when googling the real machine it is, but it can be restaurated maybe?

thanx for advice

Re: Honda RA 272 paint shade

I don't think it's quite as yellow/cream as the Racing White. Maybe Racing White with a little Pure White mixed in to take the edge off of it...

Re: Honda RA 272 paint shade

Hi

When you at Goodwood Festival of Speed looks at the classic Hondas on display from the official Honda musuem straight from Japan, they are clearly restored in very bright white - like TS-26.

But when looking at old pictures they are clearly not as bright white. A new Honda roadcar can even be ordered in a off white colour, so there is something about it. My personal guess is in the old days oil paints were used. Compare it with classic Humbrol 22 that over time will turn very off white even though you could have painted the model in bright white. It could have been the same with old Hondas. Personally I like them best in bright white though.

Re: Honda RA 272 paint shade

restored RA272 is definitely whiter than the Tamiya Racing White.
restored RA273 while whiter, isn't pure white.
I remember photo of a RA271 that was definitely creamy though and period photos of the car and crew who are wearing white shirts shows that the colour of the car is not the same pure white of the crews' shirts.

It's hard to say when a lot of modern photos of the cars have them in brightly lit show-room conditions.

I would suggest you to go for paint with mix of Gunze Mr Color Metallic and Vallejo paints. It looks great!

Re: Honda RA 272 paint shade

Thnk you gentlmen for your replies, what confuses me also is that drivers names are in bright white decal and car should be ivory but period pics dont show that difference between name decal and paint. easiest way for me would be TS7 coz I have it, but i am not decided right now...

Re: Honda RA 272 paint shade

I would go ahead and use the TS27.

I couldn't say if it is absolutely spot on accurate, but at this point I don't think that anyone can prove that it isn't. I think it looks offwhite in just the way that it should (and the fact that restored versions are being done in bright white kind of suggests that nobody else really knows what's right.

You can drive yourself crazy looking at pics trying to decide which is correct- but keep in mind that shades of white are difficult to photograph accurately- at least to where accurate color matching is possible. In both film and digital photography, whites are the first colors to overexpose.

Re: Honda RA 272 paint shade

I f you plan to show it here is something else to consider. Most model shows have bright white table cloths to pump up the light level. Racing white looks a bit yellow in contrast as if the clear went off.

Re: Honda RA 272 paint shade

Take a look at the Testors Lacquer "Classic White" if available to you. It's not as bright as the Tamiya Pure White but nowhere near as creamy as the Racing White.
