Engine dies out when running.
I have a 2000 Town Car that has never run right since I got it last year. It's engine dies out when running under power at most speeds.
The engine keeps running but has no power and will not keep up speed. It just runs at idle. It will only recover if the ignition is shut off and then turned on again. The car has been in a garage for months! They have replaced the fuel pump, injector work and now a new computer has been put in and programed and still the engine dies out! What to do? Please help. |

Re: Engine dies out when running.
i doubt it, but how about a fuel filter? by dies out do you mean it stalls? (just trying to ascess your description) when the motor "dies out" does it sputter/hesitate?
or is it more like the motor keeps running fine but the car just stops accelerating? when it does that does the motor's rpm's increase?

Re: Engine dies out when running.
Thanks for the replys. When going 72 mph on the highway the engine will suddenly only put out enough power for an idle. Pressing on the gas pedal does nothing. The only way to get it to recover is to turn off the ignition and restart it.
The garage gave me the car back five days ago and I drove it 600 miles and it died out five times. I brought the car back to the garage (again) and they read some codes and are now guessing that maybe its going into what they call a "failsafe mode" due to some transmission irregularity. They have the car again. |

Re: Engine dies out when running.
If engine isn't performing, it could give symptoms of a bad Transmission irregularity!
Need good HP for constant hydraulic pressure for transmission. I have seen plugged catalytic converters choke out 4-cylinder engines, but CAT's usually blow out on V8's, thus ECU will throw codes p0420/p0430. Some newer cars have a cable less throttle body and when dirty will give the same symptoms. The elctronic control module on the throttle body will lose control of the throttle plate, from being strickey of PCV+EGR gunk. Lincoln service would charge $2K for a new throttle body,or you could buy a used cleaned throttle body on ebay for $200. Using a micro cloth,WD40,and fogging oil to clean throttle plate + exercise by hand. During this Throttle body cleaning, it's a good idea to clean your MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner. Caution - don't use a harsh carb cleaner, because it will strip protective coating and damage seals on your throttle body. Cable throttle body back in March and found lost HP,see http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=949299 more Electronic Throttle body back in Jan and found lost HP,see http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=882939 If School book Technicans go by the book, you could be throwing to much money @ the problem for root cause! Only pay for Root cause! Someday you might beable to sue a shop for being husseled or malpractice. Last edited by danielsatur; 09-15-2009 at 01:49 PM. |

Re: Engine dies out when running.
Focus on the Issues, not personal Attack's.
What elements do you need to keep a good burning fire? LOL- & throwing money @ the problem don't count. Engine deliverability Issues: Air Intake,Fuel,Ignition timing, and exhaust! Whats the most normal wear + tear + NEGLECTED ? ------------------------------------------ 1) Air Intake- Bad Air filter,MAF sensor,IACT sensor, dirty throttle body,or O2 sensor. 2) Fuel- Bad fuel,Fuel filter, injector, or Fuel Pump. 3) Ignition timing - Bad plugs, wires,or COP's. 4) Exhaust - Plugged or bad catalytic converter. A bad electrical signal from a electronic accelelator pedal to the electronic contol module on throttle body can trigger a Limp mode! LOL - I have seen + heard technicans diagnose a bad Transmission and charged the customer for both tranny + throttle body. WOW! The shop already had his car for a few months. This is a perfect case, were cash for clunkers $4500 + A new car would of been the better deal. Last edited by danielsatur; 09-14-2009 at 08:04 AM. |

Re: Engine dies out when running.
Dude - Check craigslist for BS forums, this is about fixing Autos without getting husseled and raped.
Be part of the solution not problems! 1) Profile car by the year, make, and mileage. 2) Know whats the car worth bad, befor throwing money @ it. 3) Use NADA and KBB minus the repairs. 3) Get a 2nd & 3rd opinion on repairs. 4) Use Automotiveforums search tools, befor creating a new thread. Re: Engine dies out when running.
2000 TC /120K Miles
NADA Average Trade-In $3500 / Clean Retail = $6900 Minus FUEL pump/Filter -$500 Injector service -$500 Computer -$1200 Transmission -$3500 Total= $5700 * There is still no guaratee, that your problem will be resolved. http://www.StopRepairBills.com Extended warrenty program might be a good idea for a mature car in your case.
