Talking 1/12th scale Pro Touring '69 Camaro

well here we go. As if I don't have enough major projects on my hands...lets throw one more on the fire. I got this along with my 06 mustang, and I just can't leave well enough alone. This will be done pro touring style.

Paint, will be two tone (as of right now) a base of PPG sunset metallic, with pearl white. I've removed all of the badges so far. I plan on changing all of the marker lights, they will be oval instead of round. All door handles and locks will remain in-tact. The chin spoiler will be done in CF.

Wheels: The plan right now is to create my own 18" wheels. If you have the current issue of hot rod magazine with the crate camaro, I am thinking something along the lines of the budnik hammer series wheels. I might find someone to machine the outer wheel, and then create resin centers.

Engine: It will follow typical white97ex style, some sort of forced induction or nitrous. I would love to do twin turbos but sourcing materials might prove to be the demise of that route. same with a centrifugal blower......possibly a roots low profile? who knows.

Trans: You can see in the pictures that I have a scratchbuilt transmission in the works. Inspiration a-la GTMike400. only I am going with a T-56 6 speed trans.

Interior: I plan to update the interior...if my steam doesn't run out by the time that I reach that stage. I am planning at this point to make some corbeau or some other style of bucket seats...possible even corvette type buckets, as that is what I would put in the car if I were building it 1:1.

If I manage to get my resin casting skills up to par, there might also be some resin casts of things like the seats and the transmission and such.......stay tuned for more!!!!

comments and criticisms please

Pro Touring is LOOSELY defined as a muscle car that is built to hang with modern sports cars in terms of ride, braking and handling. Unfortunately for some people that means a stock Camaro with 20" chrome wheels and nothing else. But the idea is to make a classic muscle car run like a late model sports car. You can see lots of examples at http://www.popularhotrodding.com<a r...odding.com</a>

Re: Pro Touring Camaro of a different ......size?

the goal of a pro touring ride or g-machine, is to pull a full lateral G on the skid pad

Well I don't think it has to be that. There are lots of sports cars that handle well that don't pull 1 G, and lots pro-touring cars that don't either.

You're going to make rims yourself but you're having trouble sourcing turbos or centrifugal superchargers?

Wheel centers are easy. lol. It just depends on whether I can come up with something suitable for the turbine and exhaust sections...only time will tell

I don't know how many times I've linked that guy's page here. He builds awfully impressive turbines, and I did a little bit of modification to his supercharger technique for my own TT 69 Camaro.

Re: Pro Touring Camaro of a different ......size?

I've done several scratchbuilt turbos....in 1:24. Its a matter of finding something easy enough to build them in 1/12th scale

Whoops! Didn't realize it was 1:12. There's bound to be something out there you can use. Go wander around Home Depot This is gonna be even sweeter than I first thought.

Re: Pro Touring Camaro of a different ......size?

Got a little more done on the tranny. the main body is copmlete. all that is left now is the tail shaft. and then all of the ribbing and details. I'm seriously considering scratchbuilding an LS1 for this beast......Since this is going to be my dream car in scale......but time will tell. Also did some of the body mods. I opened up the marker lights and they will all be flush with the body. I never liked the "Gills" in front of the rear wheels, so I decided to do it HOT ROD 1 style. I opened them up and made functional scoops. I will be ordering some cobra colors primer tomorrow. So hopefully in then next couple weeks this body will see some paint.....I need to find a paint code first though...that could prove to be a bear....well on to the pics

Re: Pro Touring Camaro of a different ......size?

I began drawings for the LS1 yesterday. Hopefully if all goes well I'll have some progress to show tonight or tomorrow. Im thinking of offering an LS1/6-speed combo for these cars......anyone interested?

The goal of a PT car is to handle better, get better gas mileage, and be more comfortable - hence the "touring" part. A G-machine is different, and a bit more on the extreme side. This doesn't mean huge nitrous bottles, 20" speakers and/or 26" wheels. In fact, the biggest wheels I've seen on a true PT car were 19's; most have 18's in the back.

Some good sites:

www.pro-touring.com

www.lateral-g.net

Looks like a promising start, we'll see how far you can take this monster!
