I own a 1997 GMC Jimmy. The 4 wheel drive unit is stuck in 4 high what can i do to fix this? I have checked other Threads and have seen an encoder motor listed. when I press the dash switch I hear the motor ingage as the light flashes then it switches back to 4 high.

Re: 1997 GMC Jimmy stuck in 4 high.
Remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
This will reset the 4x4 system and allow you to go back to 2wd. Then replace the encoder motor on the transfer case and don't use 4x4 until you do.

My 97 did the same thing.
It was determined to be the actuator switch located on the side of the transmission. This I'm told is a very common failure point on Jimmys. Good luck |

You should find that the vacuum switch located on the driver's side top of the transfer case will be the cause of your concern.
Hope this helps. |
