Duplicate Key Needed for 2005 Grand Am

We just purchased a 2005 Grand Am SE for our daughter's first car. However, it only came with one key (on which the rubber is broken where it clips on a key ring). I went to Walmart and asked if the key could be duplicated. They showed that they could remake the key. However, the key will only operate the door lock - not the ignition. From other websites I have researched, it does not appear to have a chip in the key but there may be some sort of "programming" the key to the car. Does anyone know how to go about doing so? Thanks in advance for any assistance

Re: Duplicate Key Needed for 2005 Grand Am

I'm a little confused....are you saying your old key will open the door AND start your vehicle?

But your new key will open the door, but it won't turn in the ignition lock cylinder, or it will turn in the lock cylinder, but the car won't start?

If it's the latter, does it crank over and not start, or it doesn't even crank over?

If the key turns the door lock, but doesn't turn the lock cylinder, you have the wrong key....

As for this particular key, it is a PassLock key.....it is basically a blank key, and does not contain a resistor or a transponder....
