isnt it just basically a small block has low displacement, and big block is high displacement(5.7 L)? i'm not 100%

Based on what I've read that's incorrect. Some "small-blocks" having more displacement than some "big-blocks". Their weight/exterior dimensions are different, being "big" and "small" as their names imply.

Blocks get bigger when you add 4 bolt main bearing caps and thicker cylinder walls without changing displacement. Since there is no standard terminology(slang), it could mean just about anything.

I always figured that a small block was any engine with barely any other metal around the cylinders, so having basically no room for boring. Likewise, a big block would have plenty of extra metal around to dig into in order to enlarge the displacement of the engine.
My thoughts, anyways

5.7 liters are small blocks. Small block generally rev higher and faster because of lower displacement. but the benifet of 4 bolt mains, is reliablility and strength.

Small blocks are physicly small ie 350 chev, 302 ford, 318 chrysler
Big blocks are large and heavy ie 454 Chev, 428 Ford, 426 Chrysler Small blocks can be bored and stroked to the displacement of Big blocks giving you small size and weight with big cubes |
