88 spider quad alternator probs

I have an 88 spider quad that for some reason the voltage from the charging circuit hovers around 12 volts. It's not quite enough to keep everything going and the charge up. I have checked all the grounds, and have replaced the alternator. Funny thing is, when the alt. is replaced, it puts out the required voltage around 13.8vdc, then after just a bit, it drops back down. Any thoughts on this?
