Datsun 280ZX performance specs

i am thinking of buying an ealy 80's Datsun 280, but im not sure of the performance. I'm looking for something thats cheap, but that i can easily modify to possibly run in an autocross. Other cars in that im looking at are an e30 (86-92) bmw 318is or 325, or an old RX-7. Any website links would be a good help too. Thanks

The 1980 280ZX is the last year of the older style engine with dished pistons. This is from memory.

1975-80 Z-cars
2.8L fuel injection
155 lbs torque at 3400 rpm
135hp at 5200 rpm at the wheels

1981-83 280ZX
2.8L fuel injection
166 lbs torque at 3000 rpm
145hp at 5200 rpm

Those cars weight in at 2900 pounds about the same as the 280Z although they look much bigger. using a 6-cyl is much better for an autocross racer, but an older 240Z with a newer 280ZX engine would be even better due to it being much lighter.

By opening up the intake and exhaust, including headers, you can add about 15hp that brings you up to 170 lbs/ 160hp

Now keep in mind this is real horsepower on a dyno, not "Honda" horsepower where their 160hp Prelude dynos at 136hp

Yea, the 280zxt engine will fit, i dont think you would need any modifications...

I crashed my 5 spd '83 280zxt a while ago... motor had 180k miles but ran fine... had a lot of stuff fixed before I crashed

If you were really interested I might be willing to go out to my dad's and pull the engine one of these weekends to sell...

Hey,

The engine is from an '83. Its in good shape, ran really good up until I crashed the car. It pulled hard, and had a lot of parts replaced recently (all 6 injectors, new exhaust gasket, oil changed pretty often, replaced water pump, might be some other new parts, I would have to look through all my papers to remember)

I live in Ramona, California. The car and engine are at a friends house about 30 mins away. I could just sell the whole car if you wanted that... it isn't drivable, but you could put it on a trailer and tow it away.

Where do you live at? Send me a PM.
