2000 Alero Dies

Hello,

I know these issues have been basically beaten to death but
seems like the same issues require different fixes. Huh? What
am i talking about? Oh, i'm so glad you should ask.......

2000 Alero
2.4 4 cyl.
Automatic
Air
Power seats, windows, locks
etc.
---------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM # 1.

Driving down the road, goes 40-ish mph, no power, no guts.
NOT A TRANSMISSION ISSUE (no slipping)

Can we almost assume that this is a bat CAT?
---------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM # 2.

Driving along and 'DEAD' like turning off the key. No sputter
or anything..... just 'INSTANTANEOUS DEATH'.
Sit a few minutes and 'WAH-LAH" starts right up and
after it warms back up.... Repeats the whole process.

What i have read and what's been told to me that i should
be checking is as follows:

1. Fuel Filter
2. Fuel Pump
3. Fuel Pressure Regulator
4. Ignition Coil
5. Ignition Coil Cover
6. Ignition Module

I lean more towards the ignition module as the culprit
because it seems to be too SUDDEN/ABRUPT of a thing
to seem like it's a fuel related issue. Speaking from past
experiences with other vehicles, in general, you usually
get a miss or sputter or something before they die.
Also (excluding the CAT issue) it starts fine and
idles fine and no missing or anything.

This leads me to my actual question....

Has anyone had this same problem that required
an Ignition Module to fix it?

Also, i paint houses and install tile and am not a
mechanic so i do not have special gauges and
or meters so lets play make believe here and
pretend i can test something with a standard
volt/ohm meter and a stick.

Thanks!!!!
Dave

Re: 2000 Alero Dies

Don't know if you have had your pro fixed yet or not but I had the same thing happen to me and it was my fuel pump. I have a 2.4 2000 alero. I could drive for about 45mins at 55-60 mph and then the car would just shut off. I would wait for about 5-10mins and the car would be fine for a while then it would shut off again. When going at higher speeds 70-80mph on the highway it would only last about 20mins. The mechanics all said I needed a tune up replaced the plugs/wires and the ignition module and didn't solve the problem. Did this twice because the 2nd mechanic I took it to said there were known issues with the plugs I bought. Finally solved the problem and it was the fuel pump, baffeled the mechanic because he said they usualy just go out and the car wouldn't start until it was replaced. Chalked it up to basicaly the pump would heat up and in a sense "over heat" car would turn off the pump would cool down and then it would work again until it "over heated" again. Hope this helps.
